As a stepping stone, he plans' to become a split end for San Jose State next fall. However, before Evans concentrates on football, he has another season of track eligibility left.

"I want to run the 880," he revealed. "I'd like to get under 1:48. I haven't run the half-mile since I was a freshman. As you know, San Jose is a sprinter's school. BY MAL FLORENCE TIikm ItiM Wrltw No one in the world has ever cleared 18 feet in the pole vault, including Bob Seagren, the handsome Trojan, but he isn't "psyched" by the height. Seagretl' broke' his' own world indoor record by twisting over 17-6 on his -third try Saturday night at the 10th annual Times In- door Games at the Forum.

then ordered the bar to an even 18 feet, a height that is considerably more traumatic than, say, 17-114. He had as he described it, "one worthwhile try," but went under the bar on his first and third attempts. First Try Indoors "If you don't jump at 18 feet, how can you make it?" reasoned Seagren as ihe explained why he had "the bar raised 6 inches in-, of trying to improved ibis record to 17-8 or 17-10. Seagren admitted that it was his first try at 18 feet indoors, although he has attempted this, height several times outdoors. "I've seen guys clear 17 feet by a foot," continued Seagren, indicating that some potential 18-foot vaults have been wasted.

Seagren was the only he begins the outdoor sea-Bon. And, of course, his goal will be 18 feet. "No, it doesn't bother me trying that height," he said, "but you still can't help but think that no one has ever done it before." Davenport Eager Although Seagren will have plenty of opportunities to crack the magic 18-foot barrier, time is running out on Willie Davenport, who wants to break "all of the world hurdle records" before he becomes a professional football player. Davenport, a 6-foot 1, 185-pound hurdle stylist from Southern University, equaled the world record for the second time in as many nights when he skimmed over the 60-yard hurdles in 6.8. It was a smooth, powerful performance by Davenport, who was drafted on the 16th round by the San Diego Chargers, a selection that may prove embarrassing, to the New Orleans Saints.

Davenport, who played defensive back and split end in college 'explained 4 why he was drafted as low as the 16th round. "There was a mixup," he said. "The Saints were going to draft me on the Bixth round but they were informed that I wasn't a senior which was wrong. The Chargers found out I was eligible for the draft and selected me on the 16th round. The way I look at it, I lost 10 rounds." What he didn't say was that he may have lost some of his bargaining power, but it was implied.

WThen asked if he has had any serious negotia- tions with the Chargers, Willie replied: "My only contact with them was when they called and told me I was drafted I'll keep running until I hear what I want to hear." The sound of music to Davenport would, of course, be a lucrative contract. Davenport, who was timed in 6.8 Fridav night at Fort Worth, felt he would have broken the world record Saturday evening if he hadn't hit the third hurdle. "There is a tendency to go too high on the hurdles on a Tartan track," said Willie, "so I tried to get down a little lower. I cut it too fine and just nicked the hurdle." Willie left little doubt as to his ambitions. "I've always wanted to play professional football." The next move is up to the Chargers.

Lee Evans, who competed in New York City Friday night and then flew here early Saturday, caught Jim Kemp in the last few strides to win his indoor specialty, the 500-yard run, in the mediocre time of 57.0.
