Continued from first Page DiCenzo as narrator in a quasidocumentary style doesnt, in effect heighten the horror, make these senseless murders and their ragtag perpetrators (to a Beatles beat) even more monstrous. You come away wondering how such despicable persons as Charles Manson and his hippie crew exist Of course, that's Cries' point He does not believe they should.

He thinks they should have been destroyed. In the final scenes Friday night with DiCenzo as Bugliosi pointing out how soon the Manson killers are eligible for parole, the film becomes an argument for capital punishment The key figure in the film, the one you must believe in order that these events achieve a reality, is Steve Rails-back as Charles Manson, that scrawny, bearded jailbird "Jesus" who gathered these hopeless children around him and led them into the desert Railsback with his mad, staring eyes, thin, reedy voice and supernatural pretentions is a terrifying figure. When a ranch hand says "that little dude scares hell out of me," you understand how he feels. Even Bugliosi reacts to the power of those glittering eyes, that contemptuous smile. Cries in the Night Gries begins his film with the jagged title.

"Helter Skelter" (from the Beatles song that Charles Manson felt was his theme song), and then fills the screen with bloody red. But the film begins quietly. Neighbors of Sharon Tate's mountaintop estate in Benedict Canyon hear distant cries in the night. A maid reporting for work comes on the dead bodies and screams. The police arrive and move from body to body.

Miss Tate's business agent arrives. He's taken into the house and shown the body of his client. He gags, runs outside and vomits. But we don't see the bloody corpses. We don't need to.

The painstaking investigation that leads finally to Man-son and his followers is developed step by step sometimes ineptly. A little boy in the garden behind his hillside home finds a gun thrown off the mountain by one of the 'HELTER SKELTER' Lorlmar Productions of a four-hour TV movlt for CBS. Productd and directed by Tom Gries. Screenplay JP Miller, based on the book by Vincent T. Bugliosi with Curt Gentry.

Photography Nell T. Maffeo. Music Billy Goldenberg. Art director Phil Barber. Editors Byron Buu Brandt, Tom Costich, Nancy Martlnelll.

Features George DiCenzo, Steve Railsback, Nancy Wolfe, Christina Hart, Cathey Paine, Alan Oppenhelmer, Jon Gries, Skip Homeler, Al Checcho, Bill Durkln, Joyce Easton. Airs tonight and Friday at 9 p.m. on Channel 2. murderers. His father calls the police about it.

They do nothing. Frustrated, he calls again and again. Finally, the Valley Division tags it and puts it away. It will be one of the major pieces of evidence in the case. There's one nasty little scene tonight that is finely turned.

Susan Atkins is tossed into jail and two tough inmates look her over. One approaches her. Susan is not unwilling to accept her advances, but in an intimate moment she begins bragging about the murders she's committed and literally scares all the toughness out of the inmate, who cowers from her in terror. Memorable Portrayals Though Nancy Wolfe as Susan is the most impressive, there are other portrayals in this enormous cast that are memorable, notably of various Manson followers, including Cathey Paine as Leslie Van Houten and Christina Hart as Patricia Krenwinkle. In the final courtroom scenes, with their shaved heads, these three are the Furies incarnate.

And particularly effective is Marilyn Burns as Linda Kasabian, who turned state's evidence and sobbed out the story of the killings at the Manson trial (in Part II, Friday). As she tells her story, the events are recreated in a kind of surreal shadow play. CBS has issued a warning for parental discretion in allowing young people to see this production and, for once, I think it should be heeded. Not only Los Angeles did not see the film when it was shown last April. CBS stations in several cities, including San Francisco, Portland and Pittsburgh, refused to show it, not on political grounds but because of its grisly subject matter.

Nonetheless, despite the loss of these major markets, "Helter Skelter" drew enormous audiences, even topping the Academy Awards that week. By the Nielsen yardstick, the film was watched by more people than any other movie on television this last season, including "The Sound of Music." Which may say something about this country at this point in time. Chancellor and Brinkley Team for Nightly News NEW YORK The NBC Nightly News once again has David Brinkley as coanchorman with John Chancellor. Brinkley was the wry half of the Huntley-Brinkley anchor team on the program until 1970 when Chet Huntley retired from the show to pursue other business. The first of the new Chancellor-Brinkley newscasts on the regular evening news show came Monday from NBC's studios in Burbank.

The show usually originates in New York. The network said the team-up was prompted by high ratings for the pair's coanchored news specials on presidential primaries this year. Brinkley, 55, began coanchoring the nightly news with Huntley from Washington in October 1956. Huntley was based in New York. After Huntley left the show in 1970, the Huntley-Brinkley Report became the NBC Nightly News with the anchoring chores shared by Chancellor, the late Frank Mc-Gee, and Brinkley.

Brinkley later became a commentator on the news program. NBC said that when the two newsmen return from California later this week, Chancellor will continue anchoring the nightly news from New York with Brinkley in Washington most of the time. Starsky, Hutch Repeat Tops Nielsen Ratings NEW YORK ifflA Starsky and Hutch repeat last week on ABC soared to the top of the A. C. Nielsen ratings, but a Jacques Cousteau underwater special on the same network sank to the bottom.

According to the Nielsen audience estimates, Starsky and Hutch was seen in more than 19.2 million homes last week to become the No. 1 show. The Cousteau special, the week's least-watched evening television show, was seen in slightly more than 4.4 million homes, trounced in its Sunday night time period by CBS' 60 Minutes. The Nielsen estimates, for the week ending June 6, showed that the week's 20 most popular shows were Starsky and Hutch, MASH, Happy Days, Baretta, All in the Family, Laverne and Shirley, One Day at a Time, Maude, Police Story, Bionic Woman, Sunday Movie, Medical Center, Rockford Files, Switch, Mary Tyler Moore, Phyllis, Bob Newhart, Jigsaw John, Six Million Dollar Man and Kojak.
