SAT. SAT. I SUN. MAGIC MULE Gus and his trainer, played by Gary Grimes, rescue a fumbling football team. James Peterson.

Extensive football footage and in-jokes would appear more compatible to the adults and older children. But on the whole, "Gus" is zippy, lighthearted and engaging entertainment for all those who wish to believe in magical mules. LINDA GROSS MOVIE REVIEW Football Fun From Disney "Gus" (which opens Wednesday citywide) is a funny and loveable, though familiar Disney live-action fantasy film for football families about a mule from Yugoslavia who salvages a sagging LA. gridiron by kicking 100-yard field goals. Following the advice of his pretty secretary (Liberty Williams), the harassed and indebted owner of the LA.

Atoms (Edward Asner) imports Gus and his shy trainer (Gary Grimes), whose ego has been overshadowed by his successful older brother soccer star, to entertain the Atoms' few fans. Gus peps up half-times by kicking field goals and soon graduates into a regular team-member with his own numbered jersey while the Atoms become a winning team. Complications ensue when Asner's foul-weather friend (Harold Gould) threatens to foreclose on an outstanding debt and take over the Atoms unless they win the Super Bowl. To insure the team's defeat, Gould and his unsavory lawyer (Dick Van Patten) hire a pair of conning ex-convicts (Tom Bosley and Tim Conway) to abduct Gus, who outkicks his kidnappers and returns to the stadium just in time for the final moments of the game. In the Disney tradition, Gus is loveable and wise one step ahead of humans in agility and intelligence.

The film 'GUS' A Buena Vista Distribution Co. presentation of a Walt Disney Productions picture. Producer Ron Miller. Associate producer Christopher Hibler. Director Vincent McEveety.

Script by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson from a story by Ted Key. Photography Frank Phillips. Music Robert F. Brunner. Editor Robert Stafford.

Featuring Edward Asner, Don Knotts, Gary Grimes, Tim Conway, Liberty Williams, Dick Van Patten, Ronnie Schell, Bob Crane. Johnny Unltas, Dick Butkus, Harold Gould, Tom Bosley, Dick Enberg, George Putnam, Stu Nahan, Iris Adams. Running time: 1 37 minutes. MPPA-rated: G. relies too heavily on this gimmick and makes the ending, in which an underachiever becomes a hero, predictable but not entirely satisfactory in terms of plot or character development.

The script by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson, from a story by Ted includes some hilarious gags, slapstick and spoofs. The team's cheerleaders are plump and platinum klutzes who fall from their fancy formations into the band's drum. Gus eludes the bumbling heavies, Bosley and Conway, in a zany, madcap supermarket chase. The movie also mocks the antics of television sports-casters. Johnny Unitas, as himself, and Bob Crane, as his Howard Cosell-type sparring co-host, provide humorously competent and pompous portrayals.

Comedians Asner, Don Knotts, Gould, Conway and Bosley are all in their usual very fine form. Grimes and Miss Williams are natural and charming as the young lovers, and Gus is unmatchable as Gus. Director Vincent McEveety keeps the comedy broad but still manages to capture the egotism, showmanship and enthusiasm involved in football. "Gus" contains some stalwart football players including Dick Butkus, Tony Baker, Charlie Cowan, William Drake, Fred Dryer, Harold Jackson, Cody Jones, Richard Kay, Bob Klein, Lawrence McCutcheon, Eddie McMillan and FOX. ligltwMd- 678-2323 CINEMA 21.

A skeptic might say it was nothing more than listening to records; Baumel didn't claim anything more than that for it himself, but if this participant is typical, things were felt, insights were glimpsed. Sunday afternoon, Dave Bacon led a session of New Games on the lawn for everybody who wanted to play-youngsters, middles, oldsters.

We played Earth Volleyball (the ball being approximately as big as the earth but surprisingly easy to move once you found the balance point) and Hug Tag and this too, had its insights, though basically it was for fun. GTF continues every day but Monday at Barnsdall and there's a full schedule available at the Carriage House, 2625 Portland St. But really the best thing to do is to drop up there and go with the flow.
