THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 13, 1941. THB'DAILY COURIER, CONNT5LLSVILLE. PA. PAGE THREEL Navy Possesses World's Deadliest Torpedo Planes By United Press.

WASHINGTON, Feb. said today the U. S. Navy possesses the most deadly torpedo planes-in the world but that newer, more speedy types are being developed to make them less vulnerable to gunfire. Attention also is being given to developing long-range torpedo which could take, off from land bases, such as those acquired from Britain, and fly hun- dreds ot 1 miles to -intercept an enemy fleet.

The officials said certain new developments brought to light in Britain's successful aerial tor- attack on the Italian fleet at j.Taranto- are being tested by the but that so far there ap- j.pears to be no reason for chang- I ing operating tactics. i These officials, who are famil- Mar with information obtained the British concerning the Taranto-engagement, said they were still convinced of the super! iority both American torpedo and combat technique. They emphasized, however, that were not belittling the British feat which made naval history. With the development of planes, they said, it will be possible to overcome some of limitations on torpedo at- tacks. At because of their vulnerability to gunfire 'when they come in low to drop their torpedoes, planes generally make their approach on the 7-enemy under the cover of low' lying mist or clouds.

High speed planes could swoop down-for the and fly out of range before 'guns could be brought to bear, Lthey said. 'Krivitsky J. B. Matthews Special investigator for the Dies CommitteGj J. B.
