For -tie headquarters of the turf, yesterday's proceedings were singularly tame and commonplace, and, with none of the seven, races sroosing more than passing interest, the vagaries of the weather irer the general topic of conversation, especially after a nrrkm'c gtonacloud bad swept- the coarse. Par- Reid Walker's handsome old black had a 101b allowance, and, class telling, he won quit easily at finish.

His success entails no penalty for the Chester Cap, bnt, an the Lyddington people were afraid to back him yesterday, it is not likely that he be to their liking next week. Winifreda According to the touts, Dusky Queen ran away from Sidus in her test gallop, and, as Lord Cadogana ran wonderfully well, in the Two Thousand Guineas, she is sure to have plenty of backers- An excellent judge of the game aes-iies me that she will -wery close, but there is" very Uttie encouragement back her on the book, and I shall pass her over for Merry Gal, Sainte STitoacbe, Vain Duchess, and Winifreda. Those who blindly follow the eclonrs of Musker assert- that Our Grace will figure in the flight, but she must have made more than ordinary improvement between, two and tire years to be dangerous. Merry Gal is a difficult customer to with, and it would onlv require a bint that the stable fanev her for me to declare on her. With Sir Blundell Maple still much out of luck, I shall fine down the issue to Vain Duchess and Wini'reda. Duchess is slightly touched in her wiud, but infirmity is very slight, and will make no.

difference to her over a mile course. Everybody connected with St. Gatien House is very sweet on her chance, accordingly I give a plumper for VAIN DUCHESS. Forfaishire runs in the Brinkley Stakes, bat as Disguise IL has not been sent from BeeibamiptoQ the outing will be nothing in the iriture of a Derby triai, it will be impossible to back Sheriff Dewa-rs great horse. Eulogy should hold Zanoni safe in the Bretby Handicap, out he will have to reckon with London, Petridge, and Dewi Sant.

As have before pointed out, London will be better by aourse this than by the Lincoihshire Handicap mile. There is, however, smite doubt as to bis running, and safety's sake I shall couple. Exdogy and London. Trussing Cup a pair I have ticked for Friday Welter Handicap. The latter: ran well, behind Binovata colt at Epsom, and may win.

Another young Melton, the Minera. colt, will be seen under in the May Plate, and I am told that the Bush-ford stable Kopes to lower the colours of the Liyer-nool and Sandown wimier, tba Polly Eccles colt. I loth to desert the public performer, birt it is. bad olicy at present to oppose Mr. Masker.

in at to 7 1 conditions, when the contest took place on these links before. The only limitations to its eiceDsa.ce were those radical and unavoidable. The King's Norton links are not situated on the coast, they pro bably never will be there are no sand dunes, and the sab-soil is clay. Bat then every one or ttie competitors on Tuesday and Wedr.esdtiy was more at home in his golf among inland fields than he would have been on the seashore, and not ooe of themcoald urge the style of the coarse or its condition an fcxeuse tor a baa score. i.

lie lengths are now aU i admirable, and, provided as in fact is always thej case a roan plays the prescribe distances at eacn shot, hs will never see a hanker. Tho patting- creens were broaght into ir.eir best possible corsca- tion, r.o doubt, beb to nn i hnh for ail that ther constituted the most difficult and trvini portion cf the round. In hardlv a. j-inrrle instance did thev encourage or favour long pats. In our opinion, this and this alone is the reason for the disappointing scores for it mast be confessed tbt we expected more than two rounds in the seventies), bnt the greens, as we say, were, while not being unfair in the least degree, decidediy difficult.

One line to the hole would catch a ball and stoo it another line, and a ball hit with the same strength would be a difficult pat from the other side. The sreer.s were at the opposite pole to the billiard- table class, and, while not urging this necessarily as a disadvantage, it is only right to proclaim it as a defence for the scores as evidence altogether of the standard of play in the Midlands. In competitions such as lhe9e it is frequently urged that nerves are accountable for a good many strokes, bat from a knowledge, of the players, and from watching the play, we begin to be very sceptical on this point. There could be no two opinions that most cf the competitors thoroughly enjoyed the day oat, and we should say this year the number who stood on the first tee iix. feor and trembling formed an, inconsiderable contingency.

Sufficient distinction does not seem to be made between doing a score at a particular time on particular day, and for a particular purpose, and the score which is mentioned in conversation, or in other words the best score onfc of a week's play. For when A meets and says I was rouDd so-and-so in Si," ho means that ic perhaps sis rounds that was his best score, omitting mention altogether of the other five. Criticised from this point cf view, then, we may take it that only a proportion of the competitors were able to get in their best or conversational scores- The others went round in a good score, but one that, had it taken place in a series of half a dozen rounds, would not hare been deemed worthy of mention. But the competition has brought onfc one very significant fact. We have in the Midlands a remarkable number of fine average golfers.

The number cf men who went round in the eighties was the most salient feature cf the competition, and one upon which to reflect with pride, and we would point out that in 1895 the winning score cf 2S9 would this year have placed its compilers last but one in the competition. Tea 1896 score of 266 would this year have been bracketed sixth, with three other clubs, while even last year's score, made by Horth Warwickshire at Streetly, 253, would this yeac have taken third place. We live in hopes to see before many years are over the winning teams all in the seventies, or rather making a score working cut an average which would be under eighty. The weather was all that could be desired, and a correspondent informs us that a thought of one of the competitors, whilst admiring the beautiful gceDery of the links, but who was piling up a tremendous score, framed itself in the lines, Where every prospect pleases, but only golf is vile." There was just enough keenness in the air to prevent slackness, and the atmosphere was such as to encourage theutmostconcentration of thought possible. Hands-worth, represented by Messrs.

Palmer, Nook, and Dr. Roberfcaon, won the team championship with the admirable score of 246, an average of 82. This score was no surprise. -eminently among the numerous teams Handsworth was strong all through; in fact the best score of the best man in the team, Mr. C.

A. Palmer, was the best thiDg done daring the meeting, for a score of .77 admits of few faults. Jfc precludes the possibility of two bad holes, if nob one, and on looking- into the score tve find only ono six, and that one at the leng holti played on Tuesday against a strongisk breeze. Wherein then does the strength of Mr. Palmer's game lie We should be inclined to attribute it to two elernents--streagth of arm and wrist, and care, or playing with the head.

Mr. Palmer makes the very best of bis game. He never Crusts to luck, if thought and consideration can be employed. He plays as well as he possibly can a thing which, as a matter of fact, very few golfers do. Again, Mr.

Palmer has got his arms and his wrists under perfect control, and strength of forearm and wrist, when under control, contribute more to a successful score to-day than was ever the case before. Men have found out that body-swing may be pretty to look at, and occasionally comes off, but that strength beyond perfect control too frequently spells foozling. Mr. Palmer keeps his streagth in hand, and invariably controls it, and so we find him round in 77. It is interesting at this point to consider the gold medallist, Mr.

F. W. Olive, of the North Warwick Club, who on the second day was round in 80, 81 161. This is a fine score, but not a) sensational one, and after watching the complete abandon of Mr. Clive's play one is almost amazed to find that has aecompushed anything so low.

There appears Mr. Cuve's case to be no attempt at care, while some critics have been bold enough to assert that he swings so far back at bis drives that he turns his head clean away from the faalL This is probably a fallacy, although the appearance of the player almost suggests such a thing. But there is an absence of studied care all through. Mr. Clive never doubts his powers; the control which he exercises is an instinctive one, and for this Mr.

Ciive may be thankful. Bat had he taken a little more care, we are inclined to think that bis score for the gold medal would have far out-distanced the lunners-up. Turning again to the team competition, King's Korton ana Robin Hood, as we expected, were not far from the top, taking the position of second and third. Mr. E.

F. Chance proved something, of a disappointment, as also did Mr. J. Ernest Hill. Mr.

BainHridge, however, was, as usual, not far from the top, and his rounds of 82 on Tuesday and 80 on Wednesday are amongst the beat performances. Mr. Brinton, of King's Norton, fully justified the choice of his captain, for, entering as the junior member of the team, he came out considerably in front of his two partners Messrs. Piggott and Shirley Baldwin. In the individual contest it will be rerV pleasing to golfers, to find Dr.

Robertson silver medalist. There are those who still aver that he is the finest golfer in the Midlands, contending that hisocly disadvantage arises from the lack of opportunity of play. Without endorsing this in itsenbirety, st is certainly a significant fact that a man who plays so little can on an occasion such as this play so well. Mr. Palmer, by winnmc the bronse medal, again showed that he was thornughly on his game, cud in the individual com petition he and Dr.

Robertson acain brought honours to their elab. Mr. J. O. Walford did a creditable score of 168.

Space forbids a further criticism at the moment, but the bringing together of all these local cracks on the one field on the one day is of peculiar interest, and teaches many lessons. But for the moment we must confess that there is no immediate prospect, we. should imagine, of the bogey score of the course beisig reduced. "We are pleased to hear that Harry Vardon has decided to be present as the Open Championship. It is significant, however, to note that he intends to seturnlnsmediately after it is ver, as he is to appear at Chicago oa June 27.

We are pleased to 'see that the American tour is turning out a great success for Vardon, but, ail the same, English golfers will be glad when it is over," and he will once more return' to play on British links. At Warwick the club cup resulted a win for Mr. B. K. Esdaile (101-24), 77, the beat gross being banded in by Mr.

if. bb. Bromsgrove tea; Ipsleyat Bromsgrove 30 to 0, a somewhat unequal fame. Handsworth beat Kidderminster at Kidder minster 16 to 4, when Mr. Palmer, being top man, was I cp to Mr.

Humphries. Blackwell beat RobiQ Hood 15 to 9, although Rcbm Hood was not very represented. Kenilworth beat King's i Norton badly, 27 to 6, Mr. Yin. Je.pson beating Mr.

Shirlev Baldwin 1 up. Leicestershire beat Coventry 29 to 7, a further indication that the Leicestershire team is a strone: one, and might have sent a formidable trio to King's Norton this week bad they desired. Coventry Heareall played two matches with Ward End, and beat them heavily in each case. Notts beat King's Norton 30 to 14, Mr. Barnes, of otiingfcaia, being no less than 12 up against Mr.

Frank Holiiday, a somewhat surprising fact in view of Mr. Holiday's good average play. At Coventrv, the monthly cup was won by Mr. a A. H2.

An annual fixture waa of the House of Commons v. the Saneiagh Club, the i House beica- 31 ur to 18. The House of Commons team is interesting to tne public as shoving Mr. Balfour's position in it as a golfer. He played seventh, and was nine down to his opponent.
