"Legacy," a two-woman tour de force, was produced and directed by Karen Arthur and written by Ms. Hotchkis, who first created and performed it as a play. Ms.

Arthur transformed it into a fluid, visually rich, well-choreographed film. Ms. Hotchkis' scenario evokes arid alienation of Ing-mar Bergman. The long monologues, particularly the sexual ones, are reminiscent of "Persona" and the impending madness recalls "Through a Glass Darkly." Nonetheless, her character is well rooted in the American upper-middle class with appropriate life-style and obsolete values, as well as the usual hang-ups about age, weight and looks. The only missing link in the character study is no mention of the woman's father or brother or sisters (or lack of them).

But on the whole, the portrait is painfully sound: a woman who has inherited the ability to abdicate responsibility and assign blame. Ms. Arthur directs with energy, style and control. Like John Cassavetes in "A Woman Under the Influence," she tackles the theme of an American housewife coming unhinged. But her viewpoint is uniquely feminine.

Very Expensive Quality John Bailey's excellent camerawork gives the film (shot on a very low budget) a very expensive quality. Roger Kellaway's music locks in the moods. Carol Littleton's editing polishes the film and the supporting performances are all well done. "Legacy" is ultimately the story of an American every-woman: insecure in her role and a victim of others and herself. The sexual and social demands imposed on women in this society are vividly and sometimes humorously recorded.

The film is an extraordinary achievement which succeeds not least in establishing a new legacy for American women film-makers LINDA GROSS BEVERLY Beverly Drive at Wilstiire 2754484 BOLSHOI BALLET(G) Wed. She fills her day with a bath in her sunken tub (like her mother, water is her only link to sensuality), telephone conversation, soap-opera watching, memories and masturbation. A Future Dinner Party Through flashbacks, her authoritarian and insensitive husband is revealed in contrast to her first sexual encounter (erotically and subtly filmed) with a man she loved but didn't marry; Drinking coffee laced with vodka, she tries to concentrate on planning a future dinner party and making a suitable center piece with her Steuben salad bowl.
