German rights alone went for $200,000 and paperback rights are reportedly being sold for $2 million. Durham, who writes' for the Chicago Defender, wrote the book from a series of 140 taped interviews with Ali. The book is Ali's official biography, following attempts by such writers as Norman Mailer and George Plimpton. First serial rights of the book appeared in Rolling Stone and Playboy. Although the project isn't set, a spokesman for Columbia confirmed that the studio is negotiating to buy "Bo-gart Slept Here" from Warner Bros, and replace the original director Mike Nichols with Herb Ross or Howard Zieff.

The film was closed down last month when its star Robert De Niro left because of "artistic differences" with Nichols. Richard Dreyfuss is being mentioned for the De Niro role. Speaking of Dreyfuss, who is successfully riding the coattails of the hit "Jaws," he plays a one time boy wonder of the '30s who confines himself to his house to make porno films in the upcoming X-rated "Inserts" which United Artists is releasing. A massive film project titled "They Shall Not Pass" which has been two years in the writing, has been picked up by Universal. Steve Shagan's original 200-plus page screenplay of the Spanish Civil War will be made by the studio next year.

"Jaws" author Peter Benchley's new novel, "The Deep," will be made into a film by Columbia as the first independent production of outgoing world production vice president Peter Guber, under his new three-year contract.
