3-Cuiiiberland Evening Times, Saturday, Maf 6, 197Z A 'v i Could Today Be A Memorable Moment For Derby Underdog? By ED SCHUYLliR JR. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Some of America's greatest thoroughbreds have won the Kentucky Derby, which has its 98th running today, but some of its most memorable moments belong to the underdog. Citation, the last of racing's eight Triple Crown winners, is very much a part of Derby lore hut so are Donerail and Caiio- nero II. Entered in today's S125.000- added, lU-milc Derby at Churchill Downs were a field of 16 3-year-olds that included Riva Ridge, the 1971 2-year-old champion, a rank outsider named Dr.

Xeale. Post time was 5:40 p.m., EOT. Television coverage was scheduled for 5 and radio coverage for p.m.- 5:45 p.m., both by CBS. In the 1913 Derby, a jockey called Roscoe Goose rode Donerail to a one-half length victory over Ten Point for a winning mutuel payoff of. $184.90.

This is still the biggest payoff in Derby history. Last year Rarbizon Streak, Knight Counter. Jr's Arrowhead, Fourulla and Saigon Warrior, members of the mutuel field who finished in the last five places. But the other field, horse was Canoncro 11 who not only won but made a run at the Triple Crown by also winning the Prcakness before finishing fourth in the Belmont Stakes. A mutuel field is made up by the track oddsmaker to keep the limit of 12 separate bottins interests allowed by Churchill Downs.

'The field horses are considered outsiders. In Johnny Loftus rode a colt who had no previous wins to a five-length victory in the Derby. The horse was Sir Barton who became the first winner of the Triple Crown. Brokers Tip did not win the Triple Crown. In fact, the only race he won in 14 career starts was the 1933 Derby highlighted by the whipping between his jockey, Don Meailc.

and Herb Kisher, the rider of runner-up Head Play. Despite the (act they had never won before the Derby, neither Sir Barton or Broker's Tip paid real big prices. Sir Barton paid S7.20 as part of an entry while Brokers Tip returned $19.88. Other longshot winners of the Derby included Dark Star, who paid S51.SO after handing Native Danrer his only defeat in .195:1: (iailahadian. S72.40 in 1940, and Proud Clarion, in 19ti7.
