Produced by Jules Levy, Arthur Gardner end Arnold Laven.

Directed by Sidney Pollack. Original itory and screenplay by William Norton. Photographed by John Richard Moore. Edited by John Woodcock. Featuring Burt Lancaster, Ossie Davis, Telly Savalas.

Shelley Winters, Armando Sylvestr. hood pitch is ironically delivered by Miss Winters. Savalas dead, she proffers a bottle of bourbon to a conquering young Kiowan (Armando Sylvestre), remarks philosophically that "Ah, well, they're all men," and is off to squawdom without further squawk. A Writer's Picture "The Scalphunters" is a writer's -picture, on occasion almost too much so, in that some of the dialog has a rather literary quality. It is also, and remark-' ably, a film which mixes humor and bloody violence, character study and swirling action.

Director Sidney Pollack gives us a stunning sequence of horses going loco at a poisoned waterhole, and a couple or grisly pitched battles. Like the plotting, the Mexican locales are off-trail and interesting. Ossie Davis' role is beautifully played, with a restraint which heightens the humor. Burt Lancaster is always an interesting actor to watch, though in this case I think he is less successful than Davis in giving credible life to Norton's creation. Savalas again portrays oily evil very 'well indeed, and Miss Winters is fine as the wistful pouter-pigeon.

In all, "The Scalphunters," which opened Wednesday at the Wilshire, Is a lively, ribald and unpredictable pleasure which carries the western into new country. FURTHERMORE: Speaking of a writer's picture and having rendered huzzahs over "No way to Treat a Lady," it was unthoughtful of me not to have acknowledged gratefulljr that what set Rod Steiger in motion so excellently was John Gay's screenplay drawn from William Goldman's novel. 'No way to treat a writer, or two. In Color MATINEES DAILY SHOW TIMES DAILY 3:15 5:00 8:30 I i A DUlL lUWAKUu PRODUCTION EST iNCLVoma S1' Spencer JRACY Extra! ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEEI Cartoon "WHAT ON EARTH 16th 9 SHOWTIHES: uMi 5 Mora "The Scalphunters" was William Norton's first film script and it was snapped up instantly, and no wonder. As an idea and a story it has an invigorating freshness and the rare-quality of surprise.

It is what Western writers themselves call "off-trail," in the best sense of the word. Burt Lancaster is a trapper, a mountain man crusty both from solitude and not' washing, ending a winter's work with a heavy pack of pelts. Kiowa? hijack them and leave as consolation prize Ossie Davis, a runaway slave from New Orleans, latterly adopted (he says) by the Comanches. Moments after this transaction, master and slave watch the Kiowas brutally attacked a band of scalphunters under Telly Savalas, who gets custody of Lancaster's furs as well. Savalas travels in a rococo gypsy wagon decorated with Shelley Winters as a frontier hooker dreaming of grandeur.

Story Goes On Lancaster and Davis pursue; Davis is captured and becomes hand-servant to Miss Winters. Lancaster pursues and harasses the Savalas band. And now, as the magazine serials used to say, go on with the story. The movie, essentially, is the story of the Lancaster-Davis relationship, with its wry, sly reversal of traditions. Lancaster is the noble savage (the sa-' vage, anyway): illiterate, resourceful, cunning, possessive, suspicious of learning.

Davis is the slave, but the city-slave, educated, and even (given half a chance) effete, a man of poetry and haut cuisine, as misplaced in the western wilds as King Kong in Manhattan. Norton sketches a kind of triangular warfare: Lancaster Davis vs. Savalas. But the main event is Lancaster vs. Davis, a battle of wits culminating in a slugfest in a waterhole which ends with both men symbolically and indistinguishably coated with mud.
