By comparison, only one of the Rams' five touch- downs had a Minnesota asterisk a 59-yard run by rookie tackle Willie Molden with a blocked Tarkenton pass which set up the third score (28-21) in the third quarter. This is not meant to besmirch the Vikings' victory as they, valiantly Grove ox yards for the winning field goal when the Rams were on fire and spoiling for a win in the final minutes. I Tarkenton (17 of 25, 249 yards, 2 TD) is still an enig- HOW THEY SCORED Munson was helped of the field and moved directly to the dressing room. When X-rays revealed no torn ligaments, Bill's left knee was heavily taped and he returned in the third quarter to lead a stirring Ram comeback.

With Munson at the controls, the Rams won the first quarter, 14-7, the third, 14-7, and the fourth, 7-3. But while he was absent, the Vikes took the second quarter (and the game) with a 21-0 landslide. Yet, as disgusted as he was over the controversial late tackle, Svare refused to blame Munson's enforced rest for the loss. The coach pointed to a second quarter Vike touchdown on a blocked punt and a 92-yard kick-off return that set up their first score as the most damaging blows. Mental Lapse "Nobody should ever have a punt blocked in this league," he said.

"It was a mental lapse on the line. And to allow a kickoff return like that is ridiculous. Both were inexcusable errors." Otherwise, Svare was pleased with the effort. "Don't look so glum, fellows," he told the press. "It was a tough one, but I thought nearly everybody did a fine job." He praised Munson, Dick Bass and Terry Baker in particular for great efforts.

But the Rams' Dick Bass still had plenty left as he somehow managed to slip away from Vikings' Jim Marshall and sprinted 49 yards for Rams' first touchdown in 38-35 loss to the Vikes. Tarkenton twice wheeled out to his left, stopped, dodged, whirled and then fired far across field to his right for touchdown passes to Gordon Smith and ex-Ram Red Phillips in the first half. In each case, the ball was in the air some 35 yards, the net gain was three yards and seven points.

"Sure, they were planned plays," Tarkenton said. "In both cases they were alternate receivers. If the primary receiver is covered when I roll out, then there is a good chance that the man on the far right will be left open. "Before the touchdown pass to Phillips, Red told leading rusher, gained 157 yards on 20 carries and set up second Charger touchdown with bursts of 17, 11 and 16 yards. We Challenge Any Manufacturer of Tires to Outwear This Product. BY BION ABBOTT Tlmei Staff Writer It may look like madness, but there is devious method in the scrambling of Minnesota quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

Norm Van Brocklin, mastermind of the victorious Vikings, and Tarkenton agreed conclusively on that point Sunday while they were digesting the fruits of a 38-35 triumph over the Los Angeles Rams deep in the comparative cool of the Coliseum dressing room. "They are really just rollouts," Van Brocklin declared in a voice that had been worn to just above a whisper during the thriller. "It breaks the rhythm of the coverage. iV There were others: Ram tight end Marlin McKeever, halfback Terry Baker, tackle Charlie Cowan and Viking! linebacker Rip Hawkins and defensive tackle Jim Trestei. It was rousing contest, one that put the Vikings (1- 2) back in the western Con ference race and left the Rams (1-2) beaten, but not disgraced.

A cynic might ask, "OK, the offense was there today, but what about the de fense?" In all due respect to Tark enton, Mason, et two members of the Rams' famed front four, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Gner, made only token appearances, while a starting rookie, Tim Powell, was carried off the field in the second half (ankle sprain). And, for an extended per iod in the final half, rookie linebacker Fred Brown was filling in at defensive end. As for the 73 points whicn were registered on a swelter 90 degree day, here's the tally: FIRST QUARTER Bass on a 49-yard power sweep aided by blocks from Snow, uowan ana guard lioger Pillath to cap a 79-yard push (7 0). Gabriel's 38-yard screen toss to Baker under pressure on the first play following Munson's exit. Terry picked the right hole and was complemented by blocks from center Ken Iman and Snow.

A 68-yard thrust (14 '0). Viking rookie Dave Osborn returned a kickoff 92 yards, fumbling to the Rams on the 4-yard line. But, a quick whistle preserved the Vikings' position. On -fourth down from tne 3, Tarkenton scrambled left, wheeled and hit end Gordon Smith in the opposite corner for a touchdown (14-7). SECOND QUARTER Billy Lothridge's punt (4th and 19 from Ram 24) was blocked by Ed Sharockman, re trieved by rookie Lonnie war wick for a 10-yard TD (14-14).

Baker's fumble established Vikes on Ram 43. Five plays la ter, Mason stiff-arms Bobby Smith, eludes Deacon Jones ana Cliff Livingston to score from 7 yards out (21-14). Tarkenton takes vikings av yards, nailing Phillips with a three yard touchdown pass on a scramble pattern similar to first score (28-14). THIRD QUARTER Merlin Olsen bats a Tarken ton pass Into air and it is picked off bv Molden. who lumbers to the Vikings 7.

Munson then nails McKeever with a 5-yard shot (28-21). A 3rd and 9. 31-yard pass to fullback Bill Brown keeps Tark-enton's 89-yard drive alive. Brown slashes 2 yards for the score (35-21). Smith's 56-yard kickoff re turn ignites Rams, who score on 28-yard Munson-to-Bass pass.

Two brilliant Munson fakes leave Bass alone on the Minnesota 8 (35-28). FOURTH QUARTER Munson completes nine straight passes in an 80-yard suree. Snow eoes in from the 9, shrugging off shoulder pad tackle by rookie defensive back Jeff Jordan at the 5 (35-35). Cox kicks 14-yard field goal after Minnesota stalls on Ram 6 (38-35). Whew! "If we. had to play in this heat last Thursday we would have died," Tarkenton added. "Right now I'm looking forward to some Minnesota weather." Van Brocklin may have made his winning move last week when he brought the Vikings to Los Angeles last Wednesday night in time to become acclimated to the heat. It had to be 100 degrees or more in the heat of the conflict on the Coliseum floor.

"I thought we got stronger as the game went along," Van Brocklin declared. "Change of climate really bothers people, and jt helped coming out here early. "We didn't cover the Ram passing very well-but that Bill Munson, he's great isn't he? "Nervous during the game?" Van Brocklin repeated. "Sure I was. We really needed that." The Rams suffered their second loss, but they took an impressive run at a world record in Sunday's blood and sun bath with the Minnesota Vikings at the Coliseum and former mate Jobko was very much a part of it. When the walking wounded had cleared the field, it was rumored that Harland Svare's varsity had missed the mark previously established at Gettysburg by only two limp-offs.

"The whole team is going to the hospital with a six pack," sighed team physician Dr. John Perry. In the tense and bitter scoreboard struggle with the Vikes, a. total of 11 Rams were injured or reinjured on the 100-de-gree broiler called a playing-field. Five in Hospital Of the 11, there were five severe cases that required hospital treatment and X-rays and one minor "accident" that probably cost the Rams the ball game.

The latter involved quarterback Bill Munson, who went out in the middle of the first quarter and missed the rest of the first half with a twisted knee. Munson was hit hard by Jobko after unloading a long pass and sparking two early drives that boomed the Rams into 14-0 command. While the poised second-year RanvQB was in the pits, Minnesota roared back to score four straight touchdowns on a dismal combination of Ram errors and miscues to take a 28-14 half time lead. Against Rules Was Jobko's jobbing of Munson deliberate? "It was against the rules," said Svare grimly. "I know they'll say it was accidental.

But it was hitting late. The ball was in the air and on its way. "You can get anybody that way. It's easy. I know who it was, but I don't care to say.
