Weinstein had an even score, ZVtZM, to take fourth place.

He won three games and lost as many, his one draw being with Matera. Bassin, who had started as he lowest rated of the juniors, improved his status by a fifth place finish with 34. Tarjan, former California junior champion and only participant from this area, tied for sixth with Leroy Jackson of St. Louis, each tallying 2V- Tarjan defeated Bassin for his lone victory, otherwise drawing three times and losing as many. Now aged 15, he will of course have many opportunities to improve.

In last place was Gregory DeFotis of Chicago, with a score of 2-5. He lost to the four leaders, gaining his points at the expense of the western group. The tournament was sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, which paid all traveling and living expenses for the visiting players during the tournament, as well as the prize fund. It is an annual event intended to bring together the highest rated junior players in the country and to encourage further competition among the juniors. The U.S.

Chess Federation conducted the tournament in cooperation with the Piatigorsky Foundation. William Lukowiak of Providence, R. I. was the director. Following are games from the event MATERA TOPS JUXIORS Salvatore Matera, 16-year-old student at Brooklyn Preparatory School, scored 514-lli to win the second annual UJS.

Junior Chess Championship in the tournament held at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York. Matera actually clinched the title at the conclusion of the semi-final round of the eight player round-robin. At that stage he had won five games and drawn one with Norman Weinstein of New York. Defending ehampion Walter Browne of Brooklyn was in second place with 4-2, and though scheduled to meet Matera in the final round, he could no longer catch up. Browne had lost twice, to Weinstein and to Charles Bassin of Detroit.

Browne did have the satisfaction of downing Matera, to make certain of the second prize. The game, quoted below, was perhaps the best played in the tournament. Matera's prize Is an all-expense paid trip as American representative in the World Junior 'Chess Championship, to be played in Jerusalem from Aug. 9 to 20. Browne will receive all expenses to participate in the U.S.

Open Championship at Atlanta from Aug. 13 to 25. He used his time in between very effectively at Bakersfield, as indicated above. The East Coast participants dominated the tournament, least partly due to the greater opportunities for top competition in that area. In third place, with a score 4-3, was Robert Wachtel of Parlin, N.

MOSS EEOWXE WINNER IN BAKERSFIELD OPEN The first open tournament Bakersfield, played last weekend at the Hill House' Motel, was a great success as far as the number and quality of the entranU was concerned. A total of 88 players competed for the more than $1200 in prizes guaranteed by Ernest Shields of Bakersfield, ponsor of the event Among them were 33 rated masters tnd experts. The winner in a very close race was former U.S.

junior champion Walter Browne of Brooklyn with a total of 5Vt-i. He won five games and drew one with John Black-etone of Saratoga. The critical game was Browne's victory over Dr. Anthony F. Saidy of Los Angeles.

This was started in the third round, adjourned three times and finally completed after every other game was recorded. No less than seven players tied for second prize, all with scores of 5-1. On the list were Saidy. who won his remaining five games, and Black-stone, who drew with Ray Martin as well as with Browne. Others In the group were Dave Anderson of San Diego, L.
