Census Bureau American households now That's a lot of people for the networks and local stations to entertain with their programs, and this season they are doing a very bad job of it That is, if we're to believe the Nielsen ratings which are based mainly on what Americans in 1,200 of those households are looking at. The most recent Nielsen report (for the week ending Oct. 29) shows Andy Griffith, Lucy, "It's a Great Pumpkin" (special cartoon rerun of Charlie Brown), Red Skelton, I Dean Martin, the movie NBC proudly presents yearns great entertainment events. t', e. movie "The King and Family Affair and Gomer Pyle that order tor tne i too 10 most viewed urograms 2 t.

Nothing to Fill Breachi If this fact is causing any consternation among the network executives, they are concealing it very well. They aren't even indulging in wholesale cancellations.

Custer, Hondo, Good Company, Dundee and the Culhane, Maya and Accidental Family are the only new series to be given their notices so far. Maybe they still entertain hope that viewers will suddenly discover some of the new series, but it's getting late in the season for that now. Another reason for more series not being cancelled probably could be the fact that the networks haven't anything really different enough to throw into the breach. Even the pilot films being discussed for next year have the same deadly and sour ring of the kind of thing we've been treated to this season.

The large profits made in recent years evidently have caused arrogance among the network chiefs. As long as the money rolls in, and as long as Nielsen keeps assuring them that viewers are still looking at something so many hours a day, they refuse to worry about those viewers becoming jaded or deserving of better programs. This arrogance is reflected in many ways. CBS' telling Gov. George Romney that he couldn't buy time on its network until he announced his candidacy is an example.

"We have a policy," said CBS officials, "whereby we sell time for such programs only to declared candidates." Example of Arrogance In December, however, CBS is planning to air a i program tentatively titled "What About Ronald Reagan?" It will consume an hour of prime time about a jg' man who insists he is not a candidate. CBS canfcrgue, of course, that this is their report on Gov. Reagan so they JtJ call the shots. Nonetheless it brings to viewers the name and face of the man, for an entire hour, and in politics that is pure gold. 5 A somewhat smaller example of TV's arrogance was revealed recently when NBC's locally owned channel, Jj KNBC, painted "protest" signs and took them to j' Claremont Men's College for the taping of a debate on Vietnam.

"We brought them," said KNBC's Bob Wright, Jgj "only because we thought students might not have signs I of their own." J- TV can build up quite a credibility gap of its own with actions like that, and other instances of similar "news management" on the part of TV are a matter of record now. jLj That census figure mentioned at the beginning here (94 of every 100 households having TV) becomes rather frightening when one gets the feeling that the men 2' doing the communicating over such a vast system tend to be irresponsible and arrogant.
