Harriett Johnson of the New York' Post concurred: "It is surprising that a first-caliber orchestra like thte Los Angeles Philhar-. monic never visited New York before, but it came in last night with jet-speed 'and near-cyclonic impact.

There is no doubt Los Angeles has a wonderful orchestra and a wonder boy for its musical director." 'John Brovn' at Church Stephen Vincent Benetjs "John Brown's Body" will be Repertory Unlimited's initial production in the Hollywood Vine Methodist Church, opening May 26. Performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m.. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m., will be given in the 350- seat sanctuary marking the first time the church has been used for professional theater on a continuing basis. The play will -feature Joan Tompkins, Arlene Martel, Frederick Hoffman, Jerry Douglas and chorus of 20 directed by Karl Swenson -with aa original score composer! and conducted by Salll Terri. A panel discussion featuring clergy, critics and artistic personnel folr low each performance.

Mr. and tabasco-hot temperament. the performance was to his taste. But the sense of tenderness, reserve and subtlety that 'mark great orchestral playing was missing." Alan Rich, critic of the now-defunct World-Journal-Tribune, was more enthusiastic, however. He described the orchestra as "one of the finest out-of-town musical organizations to hit these precincts in many a 12-month.

SUN. at 2 PM The Los Angeles Philharmonic, embarked on its first extensive eastern tour, received cheers from the audience and mixed notices from the press when it hit New York last Wednesday. Van Cliburn, who did not perform with the orchestra at home this season, appeared as soloist in two. sold-out Carnegie Hall concerts; The audience included such musicians as Alfred sVallenstein (former music director of the orchestra), Skitch Henderson, Itzhak Perlman, Rosina Lhevinne and Jack Benny. Least enraptured of the critics was Howard Klein, who speculated in the New York Times that the orchestra may have been tired from recent appearances at Expo 67 in Montreal.

"Los Angeles impressed as a volatile, virtuoso orchestra given to typical U.S. extroversion," lein wrote. "But the basic tone, precision of ensemble and balance left much to be desired." In Brahms' minor Piano Concerto Klein found "conductor and pianist were together metrically but not spiritually." In "Ein Heldenleben," "there was no denying the conductor's firebrand intensity he was on top of the Strauss in his choreographic approach, but his delivery over-emphasized the climaxes and gave too little stress to -Strauss' lyric qualities Lift Magazine til yndw tS yttrt of aga. for 'Hamburger' i Clonics cnapiiri I HEAR HERS ALPERT 1 TUUASA SBASS ORIGINAL 3 Hcadsy Mnmtnatlons MGM S0UNU SOUND EFFECTS' mil ms I SUPER PANAVflSION II I Rf isiLaijiiaiaA BOX OffiCEOPEN DAILY 10.00 A M. 10 HCSCPtVEO SEATS AT MATS.
