Pat Dougan, owner of the Columbia and head of the California crew, explained the poor starts this way: "Weatherly just does not respond after jibing or coming about. The boat certainly is no Columbia when it comes to speed. We made the mistake of jibing one minute before the start Saturday and the boat seemed to die. California's America's Cup aspirants will man the 1962 defender Weatherly today in a match with the new 12-meter Intrepid as preliminary trials get under way here for the 19th defense of the "Auld Mug." But if helmsman Briggs Cunningham cannot get Weatherly away from the starting line faster than he did in the two class races of the New York Yacht Club regatta Saturday and Sunday, the California sailors might as well stay in bed. Occidental College, hoping to give the Far West a second straight national title, meets Glassboro State of New Jersey today in the first game of the NAIA baseball tournament. Occidental swept the District 3 and Area 1 playoffs in six: straight games and boasts a 29-4 season record. Glassboro State is 22-1. The Tigers boast an outstanding pitching staff led by freshman lefthander Greg Millikan (10-3 with an 0.93 ERA) and senior Phil Garcia (13-1), who also is batting .355. The tournament, won by Linfield of Oregon last season, is a double elimination event.

Today's schedule: Occidental vs. Glassboro (NJ) State; New Mexico Highlands (34-11) vs. Kearney State, Neb. (21-6); Grambllng (35-1) vs. William Jewell (20-13); Eastern Michigan (29-13) vs.

But again the boat did not accelerate and we found ourselves far Eastern yachting experts, who remember Cunningham's skill in starting and manuevering the Columbia during the 1958 Cup defense against the British Sceptre, were amazed at his poor showing in the Weatherly. However, Cunningham showed flashes of his old skill in making a 12-meter move Sunday when he steered Weatherly into a favorable slant of wind and slack current and caught up with American Eagle and Constellation.

When the latter two boats became embroiled in a disastrous luffing match on the leeward leg, Weatherly moved into second place and appeared for a time to be gaining on Intrepid. But on the next beat Weatherly was unable to match the boat speed of her rivals and fell far behind. "I just can't seem to feel any response in the helm," moaned Cunningham. Observers hope the Ca-lifornians will make a better showing when they get back aboard Columbia during the July trials. Columbia is enroute to the east coast and is expected to arrive June 16.

The most serious injury occurred Saturday in the Outboard race when boats driven by Marcel Belville of Long Beach and Wade Terrill of Alta Loma collided in the first turn. Terrill suffered a fractured pelvis, a possible fractured leg and undetermined internal injuries. In Sunday's races, witnessed by 15,000 fans, Bob Kathy Wins by 2 Strokes ST. Miss Whitworth had rounds of 68-70-71 to win $2,025 and boost her leading official money winnings to $9,065. She was the top money winner the last two years. Carol Mann finished second with 71-69-71211 and won $1,585. Judy Kimball had 67-73-72 212 and collected $1,315. Sandra Haynie, Louise Suggs and Mary Mills shared fourth place with 213 totals.

Natashka will make her, seasonal bow in a midweek feature, the $20,000 Wilshire Handicap at seven furlongs Thursday. Another wild scramble among the sophomores is in prospect for this week's climax, Saturday's $30,000 Argonaut Stakes. The testing mile and one-sixteenth tussle has been shifted this season to the new turf course. A fast start for the fifth week of the 55-day campaign is a certainty, with 2-year-old colts clashing Tuesday in the $20,000 Westchester Stakes.

This will be the final five-furlong stakes test for the youngsters before they stretch out to 5V furlongs, then to six furlongs for the July 22 edition of the $100,000 Hollywood juvenile Championship. Head of Class But this week Natashka will go to the head of the parade. The dazzling 4-year-old daughter of Dedicate hasn't finished in the money since last January, but do not be misled by Euch statistics. She was good enough to earn a start In the Santa Anita Handicap in which she wound up sixth last Feb. 25.

She has not been to the races since. The Santa Anita feminine championship got away from her, too. Natashka packed 127 pounds in the $62,300 Santa Margarita Handicap, nine pounds more than victorious Miss Moona. One misstep under such circumstances could be disastrous and the even-money favorite took her bad step coming out of the starting gate. Hailed by many as the nation's best 3-year-old filly of 1966, Natashka accepted high weight and shaded Admirable in the $25,250 Las Flores Handicap and trounced Miss Moona in the $31,550 Santa Maria Handicap.

Lots of Bun After the Big Cap Natashka retired for a rest, then came back full of run at Hollypark. She indicated to trainer Bill Peterson she was ready with her last two works, five furlongs in :58 25 followed by six furlongs in 1:11 flat. Once again the pregnant mare, Admirably, will be among her opponents. And once again, Admirably may be hard to catch, with a sizzling six-furlong win in the $22,850 Sequoia Handicap possibly giving her an edge in condition. Admirabiy's 1:09 15 clocking equaled the season's swiftest.

Jungle Road, a $42 surprise in the Will Rogers Mile, will come back in the Argonaut Saturday and try to prove it was no accident. Almost all of his Will Rogers rivals will return to action, too, with the exception of Tumiga, who left town faster than he ran. The Argonaut field will be strengthened by the return to action of the Santa Anita Derby winner, Ruken, who will have a chance to atone for his third on the turf course behind Khalborough and Pagan Gem. Hill became the first golfer in the 10-year history of the tournament to lead all the way and his effort was worth $20,000 in top prize money. Gary Player, who had trailed Hill by five strokes at the end of Saturday's play, finished with a 73 Sunday to give him a 72-hole total of 277, five strokes off the pace, for third. Lead Melts Hill, 30 -year -old pro from Jackson, had a five stroke lead over the field at the start of Sunday's round but saw it diminish under the assault of Pott, who was in a five-way tie for sixth at the end of three rounds. Playing perhaps too carefully in an attempt to preserve his lead, Hill shot a 73 Sunday to give him a total of 2728 under par and 5 strokes over his previous high round of 68. Hill's first place finish boosted his winnings for the year to $32,569 and gave him assurance that this would be his best money year since he started the tour in 1958.

His previous best was $26,587 last year. Bogey Trouble Hill started the day badly with a bogey on the first hole, but came back with a birdie on the second hole and played even par through the next six. On No. 9, his tee shot hit a trap at the left of the green and it took him two attempts to get it out. He ended with a double bogey 5 on the 216-yard trouble hole and turned at two over par.

Hill started the second nine with a birdie, but had bogeys on three of the next five holes. He birdied the par five, 500-yard 16th hole, and played even par for the rest of the way. Pott's second place finish was good for $12,000.
