After a relatively slow Utart, Stein won three games In succession against Miros-lav Filip of Czechoslovakia, Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia and Paul Keres of the USSR. One of the older Soviet grandmasters, David Bron-stein, was in second place with a score of TVi-Wz. He had drawn every one of his first eight games, then won three and drawn one of his next four. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament to date is the fine performance of some of the non-Russians In the field of 18. Milko Bobotsov of Bulgaria -was tied for third place with Igor Gipslis of the USSR, each with the identical tally -of two wins and 10 draws, for a total of 7-5. Lajos Portisch of Hungary figured In another tie at 6Vi-with former world champion Mikhail Tal and recent challenger for the title Boris Spassky.

Portisch had the satisfaction of defeating cur-jent world champion Tigran Petrosian, for the fourth time in the last three years. Another former world title-holder, Vassily Smyslov, had a plus score with 6V6-5V6. Petrosian, with three wins, as many losses and six draws, ad 6-6. He was tied at that mark by Gligoric and Keres. The tournament is one of numerous events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Union.

Requests should be made to the Foundation, 400 S. Bundy Drive, L.A. 49. EXPERT CANDIDATES The finals for the Expert Candidates Tournament will be held as a five-round Swiss system next weekend at the El Segundo Chess Club, Recreation Park Clubhouse, 300 E. Pine in El Segundo.

Three rounds will be played on Saturday and the concluding two on Sunday. Eligible to participate are the leaders in a number of preliminary sections held in various chess clubs in the area. CHESS CLUB NOTES Karl Pilnlck won the cham-plonship of the Herman Steiner Chess Club, winning five games and drawing with Sven Almgren for a total of California junior champion Jim Tarjan was second with 5-1, losing only to Pilnick in what turned out to be the decisive game. David Llther was third with 4-2. Tied at 3V6-2VS were Bruce Antman, Jonathan Kolkey and Peter Rhee.

The Santa Monica Bay Chess Club, which meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Joslyn Hall, Lincoln and Wilshire, is holding its annual meeting at 8 p.m. Monday. Highlights of the past year will be reviewed and plans completed for another very active season. Visitors are welcome, and refreshments will be served. BAKERSFIELD TOURNEY Ernest Shields of Bakers-field is sponsoring an open tournament in that city and has agreed to guarantee a minimum of $1200 in prizes.

The dates will be July 21 to 23 and the site the El Cid Motel. It will be a six-round Swiss system, with the first round starting at 9 p.m. Friday, July 21. Three rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday will complete the schedule. The first prize is $500, with $200 for second and $100 for third.
