As the earth bulges and the girl's body expands and contracts the film turns into a vision of creation.

Also outstanding is his "The Human Face Is A Monument," a collection of faces both famous and obscure, young and old, beautiful and homely all of which dissolve from one to the next. It's a kind of film equivalent of Steichen's famed "Family of Man." In remarks between the various films VanDerBeek, who calls his pictures "home movies" and works on several simultaneously, said that the last 10 years have seen the rise of the personal cinema in America. (No one can accuse this member of the Underground of obscurity) VanDerBeek, who says he works from a kind of emotional logic, believes that today's artist "can't sit back and be art for art's sake. I'm fed up with politicians." He feels that there's no time to waste in breaking through to new ways of nonverbal communication hence, his experiments in "computergraphics." Programed Patterns Such pictures as "Col-leidoscope" and "A Man and His World" were made by placing a motion picture camera in front of a closed circuit TV tube that has 4,000 points of light and can make 10,000 "decisions" per second. The tube can be programed with patterns by a punch card system. The result is a dazzling, dizzying kaleidosopic effect that is curiously remi-niscent of the early modern graphic designs from the 20s and 30s. One of VanDerBeek's most beautiful movies is an as yet untitled experiment with distorted lenses.

Underground film-maker current.lv in residence at USC, showed and discussed 10 of his films Wednesday for the County Museum of Art's Contemporary Arts Council, which is eager to bring motion pictures to the Museum. The public will get a chance to see Van-DerBeek's work April 10 at 7 p.m.

and again at 9 in USC's Hancock Auditor ium. The work of VanDerBeek, who describes himself as "a social poet who both enjoys and criticizes the world around him," is remarkable for its wide range. His earlier films, such as "Skullduggery," "Breathdeath" and "Science Friction," are collages of old movies, photographs and pictures pieced together with his own imaginative animation and assembled with wit and pertinence. Later films are experiments with distorted lenses and computer techniques. Space Race In "Science Friction," for example, VanDerBeek puts down the space race.
