Sutherland's Homer is someone to behold. With slicked-back hair and heavily perspiring face, Sutherland even in repose is- always threatening to bust loose in anger at his profound loneliness. And to the degree he keeps his emotions in check, he draws our empathy.

The film's remaining characters, however, hide nothing from us, and we feel nothing for them. They simply are used by Schlesinger as just so many stairsteps to a pulpit where he can deliver a lecture. The luxurious period film is bated on Nathanael West' bitter 1939 novel about Hollywood's losers and the compelling lure of mob violence as a reaction to an empty life.

West's story is set in Hollywood's heyday, but it's not a saga of stars. The focus, rather, Is on the sour people who, as West wrote, "loitered on the corners or stood with their back to the shop windows and stared at everyone who passed. When their stare wts" returned, their eyes filled with hatred they had come to California to die." West himself worked as a Hollywood screenwriter for five years until his death from an automobile accident in 1940 at age 37. OUR PRINCIPAL guide thru West's Tinsletown is one Tod Hackett, a young, Yale-educated painter drawn to Hollywood to work as a set designer. West doesn't spend much time on the vagaries of Tod's career; instead, he's more concerned with the people Tod meets: Faye Greener, the 17-year-old who says she'll commit suicide if she doesn't become a star; her father Harry, a sickly Vaudevillian MOTION PICTURES 1st Run Chieagoland Sentenced to 28 years in never committed.

Rudy Ray NOW! Open 9 a.m. LAST FEATURE 10:20 pm I bops on the condemnation bandwagon that West joins only' at the end of his novel. The movie's characters roll by as signs of sickness, not as believable human And that Judgment was made when I saw the picture before I had reread the novel. An attitude of superiority to his characters does not well suit the filmmaking of John Schlesinger.

In "Midnight Cowboy," and more recently in, "Sunday Bloody Sunday," Schlesinger took unconventional people and revealed their strength; in "The Day of the Locust," however, despite the film's 2-hour running time, you get the feeling Schlesinger can't wait to get rid of his characters to indict Hollywood's shallowness. When West nailed Hollywood in 1939, he, was breaking new ground; 36, years later, the target seems too easy. Rather than point his film from the beginning in the direction of West's concluding cataclysm, Schlesinger should have made a smaller film that was only a character study. The novel moves briskly and with precision thru these fractured lives, and concludes with a mob scene that in 1939 clearly was written as a reaction to nascent fascism. The movie directed by John Schlesinger "Midnight is' an expensive and expansive period piece.

Return with us now to the '30s decor of "Chinatown." Schlesinger hasn't changed West's characters much, save for adding 10 years and a good dose of viclousness to Faye Greener as played by Karen Black. What Schlesinger has done, however, is exaggerate West's attitude of contempt for his characters. He's abetted by a trio of overplayed performances: Miss Black, Burgess Meredith as her father he should have stayed in Stokely, U. S. rather than give us this outsized grab for pathos, and Geraldine Page as a white satin-gowned revivalist preacher, a character not in the novel.
