Less than a minute and a half later, Jeter broke in front of Ray Berry on the Colts' 46, grabbed a pass aimed at him, and breezed to the end rone unmolested. Starr, who started slow, finished with the better of the passing duel, thanks mainly to Boyd Dowler who caught six of the Packer quarterback's 14 completions for 73 yards. Starr threw 19 times for fourth ia Boston's history. The closest the Pats came to scoring was la the third quarter when Gmo Cappel-letti'a 45-yard field goal attempt barely missed the mark. SAN DIEGO An alert Saa Diego Charger defensive secondary, led by safety Kenny Graham, intercepted four passes Saturday night to pace a 240 American Football League win over the Boa-ton Patriots. Graham scored the Chargers' first touchdown late in the second quarter when he picked off a Babe ParilU pass and returned it 32 yards.

Dick Van Raaphorst had given San Diego a SO lead in the first period with a 10-yard field goal. Bud Whitehead, Miller Farr and Chuck Allen also pirated Parilli passes as San Diego rolled to its second straight victory. The first three times the Patriots moved inside the Charger 30-yard line, Parilli threw interceptions. It was the Patriots' season opener and it was most a total loss, especially for the veteran Parilli. He completed only 13 of 39 passes for 137 yards.

He was relieved by John Huarte with five minutes left in the game. Lead Extended San Diego extended its lead to 17-0 with 17 seconds remaining in the first half when quarterback John Hadl threw five yards to Alworth for a touchdown to complete a four play, 56-yard drive. A 29-yard pass to rookie Gary Garrison and a 22-yarder to Gene Foster sparked the TD trip. Charger Jim Allison, a second-year pro back from San Diego State, provided the only thrills of the second half when he traveled 61 yards for the only points of the half. Fullback Jim Nance was the only bright spot for the Patriots.

He carried 12 times for 68 yards and was Boston's only effective receiver. San Diego's defense held the Patriots throughout the i half, allowing them across mid-field only once. That was on the final play of the half, when Parilli passed 45 yards to Nance to the Charger 30. Both teams set a league record by punting 20 times and the Chargers tied a league record with 11 boots. Hadl cooled off considerably from his opener against Buffalo last Sunday when he fired 14 for 18, and hit on only 10 of 28 for 155 yards.

He gained just 11 yards throwing after intermission. Hadl also ran for 30 yards, making this the second straight game in which he's run for more yards than halfback Paul Lowe, last season's leading runner in the AFL.
