He is paunchy and ragged and bearded and middle-aged, and his sex credit at the box office must be zero. The most appealing male star and I am simply going by the box office evidence is a gent who is almost 77 years old and probably has a set of instant uppers. He is Maurice Chevalier, doing a short turn of old songs for a brief engagement here.

He has abundant Gallic charm but I don't believe he is an active lady-killer now. Near Miss Possibly and here I write from the disadvantage of being a former boy the nearest thing we have to a matinee star is Sergio Franclji, a loud-voiced gent who looks like Sammy Davis and who is the leading man of Richard Rodgers1 "Do I Hear a Waltz?" Franchi succeeds in captivating Elizabeth Allen, a big corn-fed girl, for the purposes of the downbeat plot, but I can't imagine young girls screeching at him the way they screech at Ed Sullivan, who is almost elderly if not more so. Whom else do we have for men around Broadway now? We have Buddy Hackett, a round, eye-popping gent in "I Had a Ball." A very funny man, but nothing special for matinees. We have Fritz Weaver, who plays Sherlock Holmes in "Baker Street." He makes a very good Sherlock but he looks and acts like a tall drink of water. He does not even ignite in the presence of his leading lady, Inga Swenson, which is very poor judgment.

They will join MGM to make "The Greatest Train Robbery in the World." The announcement was made by MGM president Robert H. Charlton Heston will play Gen. Charles G. (Chinese) Gordon in Julian Blaustein's long planned adventure spectacle "Khartoum," which will begin filming the first part of July for United Artists release. The saga of Gordon's defense of the Sudan capital in 1885 was originally planned for filming last year with Burt Lancaster and Laurence Olivier starred. Both had to withdraw due to the delay in the starting date.

Blaustein will produce the adventure story in Cinerama from Robert Ardrey's original screen- nlav.
