The distortion worked a disservice for Ellis and Paeff in their solo work. But the concerts are a greatly useful addition to the local musical fare, and a fine way to spend an afternoon in the sun. Next Sunday it's Shelley Manne, Barney Kessel and Ray Brown.

And in two numbers Sunday the three drummers did long chases (swapping four-bar solos) that were exciting and since the word does fit drum work witty. Elements of Wit Paeff himself joined the group for the premiere of a short work by Milton Rogers, "Ballad for Viola and Jazz Orchestra." It i3 pleasantly melodic, but the particular linking of instrument and orchestra seems less than ideal.

Ellis also did "Study for Quarter-tone Trumpet" by a Czechoslovak composer, Pavel Blatney. Ellis' mastery of the difficulties of the four-valve trumpet i3 impressive and his solos had elements of wit. But in general the work seemed more a novelty than a memorable creation. The setting is delightful, part MacBeth, part West British star Anne Heywood has been signed by producer Raymond Stross to make her American motion picture debut in 'The Fox," adapted by screenwriter Howard Koch from D. H.

Lawrence's short novel. The picture will be filmed on location in Toronto beginning Dec. 5. Miss Heywood was starring in MGM's "High Jungle" when filming was cancelled due to the drowning of actor Eric Fleming. The new film will be made under the banner of Steve Broidy's Motion Pictures International.

Director John Franken-heimer and producer Edward Lewis will continue with their association, upon completion of editing of "Grand Prix," with a series of motion pictures, the first of which will allow them to make pictures independently of each other. Previous to "Grand Prix" the duo worked together on "Seven Days in May" and "Seconds." Producer Benedict Bogeaus is in Hollister, to discuss with Nlv-en Busch a plan for a lavish musical to be made around the life and music of the late Negro folk singer, "Leadbelly." Busch purchased the rights to the Huddie Ledbetter story a few years ago from his widow Martha, and also owns copyrights on all his original compositions. "ChEriia Bubbles" starring Albert Finney and which also represents his directorial debut, begins filming this week in En-gland. Billie Whitelaw will play his divorced wife Lottie, and Colin Blakely plays his friend and fellow writer Smokey Pickles. Michael Medwin is producing from an original screenplay by She-lagh Delaney for Universal.

John Smith will return to MGM for a top role in "Hondo," Batjac-Fenady production starring Ralph Taeger, Robert Taylor, Michael Rennie, Gar Merrill and Noah Beery. Filming begins next week. But just now the County of Los Angeles is underwriting some free Sunday afternoon concerts, under the artistic supervision of Spinoza Paeff.

Last Sunday it was the big band of Don Ellis, reasserting their triumphs at the recent Monterey and Pacific Jazz Festivals and drawing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end of a copious concert. Stimulating Group The band proved again that it is one of the most stimulating aggregations to appear in many years. Ellis and his men are fascinated by tricky time signatures: 7-beat, 9-beat, 19-beat and 27-beat measures which give their works a kind of edgy tension. At the same time, the arrangements are for the most part fast and furious. Ellis rarely lets you forget he's driving a jazz band and not a symphonic band.

He keeps a propulsion going (even if it occasionally requires two hands and two feet to keep time to it), and this is a quality "which has now and again escaped the intricate Neophonic Band arrangements. Not surprisingly, since Ellis himself is a trumpeter and a superb one, his brass sections are outstanding, better as ensembles thus far than his reeds. He uses three bassists, Chuck Domanico, Ray Neapolitan and Frank de La Rosa, and three percussionists, Steve Bohannon, CHOWS imssr JW1114 B.U1 MM4M SOME SEATS AVAILABLE FOR TONIGHT'S PERFORMANCE!
