IT'S LADIES DAY AT LOS ALAMITOS Double Rose, a swift filly from Texas, roars to victory in Futurity Saturday. With Double Rose got to wire a half-length in front of stablemate Doll Bid to collect the winner's share of $79,500. Harlequin was third.

Time photos by Jo Kennedy ALLEN'S VIEWS INJURIES HURT, Rams Don't Expect Money Troubles Turn Chargers Into Almost Overnight Failures Packers' BY MAL FLORENCE Timet StaH Writer card was $1,035,272, second highest in the history of the Orange County course. Both Double Rose and Doll Bid are daughters of Double Bid, and both are trained by veteran Earl Holmes, one of the top conditioners in quarter horse racing. Charges Into Lead With Jimmy Dreyer riding superbly. Double Rose charged right to the top. opened a commanding lead of almost a length at the midway mark, then held on grimly to hold her stablemate in a hard drive to the wire.

"She never broke better in her life," Dreyer said happily after the race. "But she was getting tired near the end." There had been no agreement between the stable riders before the race to split stakes. Curtis Perner, who is the stable's regular jockey, had his choice of mounts, and picked the wrong one. Doll Bid, his mount, had been regarded as the stronger half of the entry. $1,691 for Last Behind Harlequin, the order of finish was Stepping Star, Off Limits, Jet Straw, Tppette, Mi Pie, Vanny's Lady and Breez-ing Comet.

The latter, even though finishing last, collected $1,691 just for qualifying for the main event. In supporting races, smooth-running Tiny Watch and Go Al Go both streaked to their third straight successes of the season. Tiny Watch drove to a half-length triumph in the Josie Bar Purse, reaching the end of 400-yards in 20.7. Go Al Go was clocked in 20.9 matching Double Rose's winning time in the Futurity in romping to victory in the Moon Deck Purse. Two flying fillies from Texas, which claims to have the mostest of everything, proved themselves the fastest young speedsters in quarter horse racing.

Saturday with a brilliant one-two finish in the $169,150 Los Alamitos Futurity. Double Rose and Doll Bid tow-roped their rivals home to earn $103,181 for their owners, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Scharbauer millionaires from Midland. Double Rose, victorious by half a length, picked up the winner' share amounting to $79,500, while Doll Bid earned $23,681 for her second-place finish.

Harlequin, a slow-starting but fast-finishing colt, was third in the season's richest race, witnessed by a crowd of 13,726 on an ideal fall afternoon. The racing strip, still drying out from the recent drenching, was officially listed as muddy and Double Rose's clocking for the test of 400 yards was 20.9. Flee With Loot The Scharbauers left town in a hurry with the loot. They had to hurry to Sunland Park, where they have another potent entrv Ala Ram and Traffic Charger that is favored to win thi3 afternoon's $40,300 thoroughbred futurity at the New Mexico track. The Scharbauers are no newcomers to racing.

Mrs. Scharbauer is the daughter of the late Fred Turner whose Tomy Lee, trained by veteran Frank Childs, won the Kentucky Derby. Childs was in the winner's circle with the Scharbauers to greet Double Rose after her victory, i The victorious entry returned $5.20, $4.40 and $3 across the board. The total handle on the nine-race They're not about to sit around and let the team disintegrate." Chief among the new owners are Gene Klein of Los Angeles, an executive of the National General and Sam Schulman of Beverly Hills. They have won Gillman's affection not only by promising to give him more money for talent but by giving him a five-year contract.

Gillman said he has gotten rid of still another worry. "There was a time," he said, "when we wondered if we'd make it in San Diego. In fact, even a lot of people here wondered. But, with our new stadium going up, we are no longer worried. We know now that we've made it." The Chargers will move into their new stadium in Mission Valley next year.

Klein has said he will be disappointed if they don't sell oO.OOO season tickets. The outlook has improved substantially since 1960, when the Chargers played their maiden season as a Los Angeles club. The goal then, as we recall it, was not to sell 30,000 season tickets, but to sell 30.000 tickets in a season. San Diego plavs the New York Jets today and 28,000 are expected in Balboa Stadium. ALAMITOS The Green Bay Packers clinched the Western Conference championship by beating the Baltimore Colts, 14-10, Saturday, but Rams Coach George Allen doesn't believe that Vince Lombardi's team will merely go through the motions against the Rams, next Sunday at the Coliseum in a final regular season NFL game.

"Green Bay is too balanced and too strong to take anything for granted," said the Ram coach who watched the Colt-Packer game on television at his home. "They don't even let up in pre-season games." The idle Rams were, of course, rooting for the Packers. The Green Bay win dropped the Colts into a second place tie with the Rams, each with 8-5 records. A victory over Green Bay would assure the Rams of at least a second place tie and a trip to Miami for the Playoff Bowl game Jan. 8.

49ers in Race A 1 1 the second place dispute appears to be between the Rams and Colts, the 49ers (5-5-2) could gain the runner-up spot by beating Chicago today and Baltimore next Sunday if the Rams lose to Green Bay. The a m-P acker wrangle pits professional football's best defenses against each other. With all due respect to Green Bay's defensive unit, Allien said: "We've been the best defensive team in football RACE RESULTS Weather Cleudy. Track Fast. 3YO UP, 71.

BY CHARLES MAHER Times StaH Writer SAN DIEGO Inspecting the season's football results, you find that the San Diego Chargers have achieved almost overnight failure. They have prevailed in all but six of their last eight games, thereby sparing themselves the annoyance of having to appear in such post-season engagements as the Super Bowl, where they would just get stuck with a lot of money. Bystanders have offered several explanations for the decline of the Chargers. Some say Sid Gillman, the general manager and coach, never should have PACKERS Continued from First Page field goal attempt from the 37-yard line. Bratkowski opened the march with a 28-yard pass to Pitts and then Jim Taylor, the Packers' explosive 215-pound fullback, tunneled through for four to the Colts' 48.

Bratkowski bulleted a 14-yard pass to Marv Fleming and then hit Taylor on the Baltimore 22 to keep the drive alive. From the 18, Bratkowski then connected with Max McGee to the Colts' four. Pitts plunged to the Baltimore two and on his second plunge a slant to his right the Packers opened up a gaping hole on the left side of the Colts' forward wall and Pitts went into the end zone untouched. Pitts' first touchdown was set up by Willie Wood's interception of Unitas' first pass of the game on the Baltimore 47. From the Colt 42, Pitts broke off to his left and took a short pass from Starr on about the Colt 37.

He faked out right linebacker Don Shinnick, moved to the inside and went between two Baltimore defenders into the end zone. Anderson Fumbles The Colts struck back in the second period when Alvin Haymond ran back a short field goal attempt by Don Chandler 53 yards to the Baltimore 46. Unitas flipped 18 yards to Lorick and 25 to Matte to bring the Colts to the three and Lorick took it from the two on the second play. Bonus rookie Donny Anderson fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Colts recovered on the Packer 20. Michaels kicked his 26-yard field goal three plays later and the Colts went off the field at half time with a 10-7 lead.

But Gillman says the loss of Ladd and Faison didn't hurt that much.

Ladd has hardly been the biggest smash in Houston since the Astrodome. And Faison has been a bust at Miami. Others say the Chargers have been done in by injuries, such as the broken ankle that put middle linebacker Chuck Allen out of business in the fifth game of the season. Injuries doubtless have weakened the Chargers but, contrary to what you may have heard, their casualty list doesn't really run into as many names as that of, say, the Viet Cong. Gillman thinks the trouble has probably been as much fiscal as physical.

One reason the Chargei'3 are hurting, he said, is that he just couldn't get at the wallet of Barron Hilton, the hotelman who owned the club until this year. Money Trouble "The last couple of years," Gillman said, "I didn't have enough money to sign the players we drafted. In fact, with all respect to Mr. Hilton, I had barely enough money to sign free agents. I knew we were going to have trouble." This year, the Chargers failed to sign one of their first six draft choices.

Gillman was asked how long this economy squeeze will hold the team back. "Oh, we'll be all right now," he said. "The new owners want to get going. They want to get players. CHOOSE FROM 6 BEAUTIFUL COLORS AT 5 LOCATIONS MARKED LOW-COST BODY AND FENDER Mount Man.

ii tt Letdown since our streak started (four straight wins). I don't think there is any better defensive team than ours, do you?" Allen is neither enthusiastic nor agitated that his team drew a bye this weekend. "I would have just as soon played the game the way our club was going." he said. "But, it may work out. to our advantage.

If you are going to have a bye, I would rather have it late in the season." Bratkowski Impresses Allen, who took a rare day off Saturday, was particularly impressed with the play of ex-Ram quarterback Zeke Bratkowski, whose pass to Packer end Max McGee set up the winning touchdown in the televised game. McGee revealed later that he changed the pass pattern unbeknownst to Bratkowski. McGee ran a post pattern instead of the square out that was called in the huddle. Would Allen hold still for such independent thinking by his ends? "It's OK if it works," he said. "It took an exper-i quarterback like Zeke to see that McGee had run a different pattern."
