The weekend also marks the annual meeting of the California State Chess Federation, which will be held on Saturday evening, May 27.

Directors of the federation will be elected, and plans set for the following year. The California State rapid transit championship will be played Saturday afternoon, as the first activity. This will be a warmup for the main match, which will start about 10 a.m. Sunday. SANTA MONICA TOURNEY The Santa Monica Bay Chess Club will hold an open tournament at Joslyn Hall, Wilshire Blvd.

Tournaments are on schedule every weekend, with other events in many of the chess clubs. Following is a rundown of the major activities already set. San Bernardino Open The annual San Bernardino Open Tournament will be held at a new 6ite, Town Hall in the Inland Shopping Center in San Bernardino, over the weekend of May 5 to 7. It will be a six-round tournament with Swiss system pairings. Registration will close at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Way 5, with the first round to start at 8 p.m. Three rounds will be played on Saturday, and the final two on Sunday. The winner will receive $175 plus a trophy. A special handicap prize of $100 is offered. A number of other prizes will be announced, depending on the number of participants.

The entry fee Is $12.50 for adults and $7.50 for juniors under 21. Membership is required in the U.S. Chess Federation. members can be enrolled when registering. Gordon Barrett will direct the tournament.

Expert Candidates The Expert Candidates Tournament is a popular event sponsored annually by the Southern California Chess League. It is limited to players rated under 2000 by the USCF, or those who have never been in a rated tournament.

Preliminary sections will be held in a number of clubs throughout the area. These should start at the regular meeting times of the respective clubs, during the week of May 7. We should have a complete listing next Sunday. Five rounds will be played in each of the sections, generally once a week. The section winners will then compete in the finals, which will be completed in one or two weekends.

A total of about 100 players will probably be involved. It Is an excellent opportunity for the average player to develop his game, without being outclassed by the masters or experts. Morphy Day Morphy Day is a unique occasion. It is not devoted to a single tournament, but has a varied program particularly designed to attraot the casual players who are not affiliated with any chess club or organization. It will be held on Saturday, May 13, at the Atlas Club, 3351 W.

43rd St. near Crenshaw Blvd. Lectures and simultaneous exhibitions will be given by masters at intervals throughout the day starting about 10 a.m. These will be of particular interest to less advanced players. The annual match between the Yankees and Rebels will take place during the afternoon.

Players are assigned to one of the teams depending on their residence areas. Another regular feature is the Southern California Rapid Transit Championship, which will start about 7 p.m. last about 10 minutes, and quite a number can be completed during the evening. Of speciaj interest this year will be the presentation of a plaque to Mrs. Gregor Pia-tigorsky, who was unanimously elected to the Chess Hall of Fame by a select Committee of the Southern California Chess League.

High School Champions High school, players will have their big opportunity over the weekend of May 20 and 21, when the third annual Tournament of Champions will be contested at the Herman Steiner Chess Club, 8801 Cashio St. The tournament is -sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, as part of its continuing program of developing and encouraging chess for youth. All high schools in Los Angeles County are eligible to hold competitions, with the winner in each school to "qifaltfy for the Tournament of Champions. -iv? r.
