It is a role he is slowly presenting in European houses, but a part in which he has every nuance of the great style of Mayr, Kipnis, or Edel-mann. HildeGueden, long well as for the glorious Rosalinda she sang the next night in "Fledermaus," sang what she says will her swan song as Sophie. In looks and voice she belies what books say about her age, but she says it is time to turn Marsehal-lin. The chief novelty of the "Fledermaus" was the appearance, as Prince Orlof-sky, of Kitty Carlisle, who has been engaged for the same role at the Metropolitan this year. Fully at home in the part, Carlisle is unnecessarily somber in unrelieved black, while ATKJEES EVERYDAY 2p.r.i.

TT WIO I I for your nartt tocittofl bbbbbbbBHB NO M4M BfaHHai I SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. When Eugene Ormandy laid out the programs he wanted to present during the first sea-ton in the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, he placed the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven at the be-g inning and two great Viennese opera scores at the close. "Der Rosenkavalier" by Richard Strauss and "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss gave the last of the Philadelphia Orchestra's new summer audiences plenty of chances to hear how opera can sound in the handsome amphitheater. And it sounds absolutely marvelous. Equally Superb The stage, in what Lincoln Kerstein has already called "the greatest theater in the world for the spectacle of dancing," Is equally superb for the musical theater.

However the two Strauss works were not staged, though i i a it had been planned to give them the complete theatrical treatment. Ormandy made a decision to make both evenings concert versions. In a very real sense this had the effect of leaving the spotlight where events proved it to fall most often and most easily, directly on the glorious playing of the Philadelphia Orchestra in music it rarely performs. Those with long memories can recall that it was an earlier but also golden Philadelphia Orchestra that gave extraordinary performances of similar "Rosenkavalier," excerpts RESERVED SEATS ROW AT E8X-0FF1CE CI EY IU2U. the direction of Fritz Reiner.

But it took no memory to realize how unusual is the opportunity of hearing one of the world's fabled orchestras playing music that is, usually, taken on by a less splendid and often fatigued opera ensemble. Equally unfamiliar was the chance to hear and watch Ormandy conduct music with which, in the case of "Rosenkavalier," he can have had little or no actual experience. Not that he is not a frequent conductor of the orchestral suite drawn from the opera. But that is a very different business from taking on an hour from Act and an hour and quarter from the remaining two acts, with all the complexities of the great Hofmannsthal Strauss musical comedy. Yet throughout rehearsals and the one performance, Ormandy displayed a mature and masterful knowledge of the score's intricacies as well as the subtleties of the vocal parts.

More Astonishing Perhaps even more astonishing was the mastery with which the great or-c a assimilated the task elusive style and spirit and all in music it had never before played. Few orchestras anywhere could match the achievement. The cast was an example of the open-handed way in which Richard Leach, the center's executive director, has handled his responsibilities toward the entire artistic end of the initial summer.
