Romantic comedy starring Connia Francis and Harve skill of the girls as marksmen and dynamite planters, their routing of a train of soldiers by placing a beehive on the track and other ruses in a shooting war, the blowing-up of a bank followed by a hail of coins, the bending-down of a mayor to tie his shoelace, cuing the whole populace to fall to its knees, and so on. Medieval Tortures In the crudest taste possible, members of a monastery are depicted about to submit the two Marias to medieval tortures, a la the Inquisition or the Klan. Nor will the likening of George Hamilton, a revolution in chains, to Christ and the act performed by Miss Moreau as his Mary Magdalene be lost on many. No need to dwell on the large cast, which will be largely unknown to Americans. The special effects are by Hollywood's Lee Zavitz.

SCIIEUER Tlmaa Motion Picture Editor What a joke on us. For years, Hollywood has bowed to a tacit injunction from the powers-that-be in Washington to lay off kidding Central and South American dictators and revolutions.

Obviously, no such fear of offending somebody has bothered the international polyglot involved in the making of "Viva Maria!" which opened with a gala invitational premiere Tuesday evening at the Bruin Theater in West-wood. A Franco-American it's predominantly French (the language spoken; subtitles are in English) and Mexican. It was shot in Mexico, though the country's capital is called a mythical San Miguel. Its director is Louis Malle and his producing partner is Oscar Danci-gers. Its, co-stars are, improbably; Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau, with Hollywood's George Hamilton in for a bit.

Box Office Tonic Improbably at first glance, that is. But certainly a tonic for the box office, since both femmes, at younger and older ends of the age spectrum, symbolize l'amour Bardot (innocence) and Moreau (sophistication). "Viva Maria!" is not so much immoral as amoral. And not only does it spoof dictators and revolutions but also the church and the priesthood, officialdom generally, American westerns and western heroes, and almost any other sacred cows and cliches you can think of. Including sex itself.

In a kind of reverse revenge, though, not too many Americans, I strongly suspect, will find it very funny. At an earlier theater preview they seemed uncertain when to laugh, as though they sensed an underlying savagery Malle's caricaturing. 4 ill! t- I. 'Odd Couple' Due Monday "The Odd Couple" company, headed by Dan Dai-ley and Richard Benjamin, arrived from New York Tuesday to begin preparation for a six-week engagement at the Huntington Hartford Theater Monday evening. Other members of the company include Peter Boyle, William Pierson, Harry Eno, Rik Colitti, and two young British actresses, Diane Aubrey and Barbara Evans.

He has been called a faker and the greatest director in the world. "La Dolce Vita" was one of the most successful foreign language films ever shown in America, yet few people really understood its complex symbolism. His latest, a wildly colorful fantasy of ghosts and visions called "Juliet of the Spirits" has won wide acclaim yet even the critics cannot agree on its exact meaning. Now, the Saturday Evening Post features a major article on this controversial genius a perfectionist who has demanded 60 and 70 takes of a single scene a writer who does not know how his film will end until he has finished making it a man whose every movie hs been called another chapter in his autobiography. Don't miss "Fantasy, Flesh and Felllni" in the January 1 issue.

The leading lady, Joanna Barnes, bit me. My insurance was canceled.

For my test for the role, I recited the 23rd Psalm. It proved to contain more words than my part in the picture. Me Tarzan, you Jane; that's your big speech, four words." He spent a hoarse weekend trying to master the ape-man's yell, only to learn that the director was putting him on: the yell is a speeded-up recording of shrill cries by a couple of professional singers, female. Any man who could reproduce it has got to be in real trouble; Denny couldn't. Denny's father is professor of physical education, now at UCLA, and Denny grew up adjacent to several campuses.

Universal signed him and MGM bought his con uowmi Relets ffir fa good standing of the PTA. "Yes," came the speedy reply. "And why so? Is it that you have eyes for a pretty schoolmarm?" "No," he replied. "My PTA is the Past Tarzans Assn. I was the 13th in that noble lineage.

I was the only one, as it turned out, to play the role in complete secrecy. Also, I was the only blond to play it, but I am not sure I had more fun. Mike Henry is Mizzy, who created title tunes and music scores for Filmway's The Addams Family, Green Acres and The Double Life of Henry Phyfe, was specifically cited for his musical "atmospheric, dramatic and comedy effects." STAR Brigitte Bardot is music hall entertainer involved in revolution in "Viva Maria!" comedy at the Bruin Theater for run. Nevertheless, many of the sight gags, particularly those withheld till the whirlwind slapstick finish, are funny. Malle still employs the New Wave abrupt, non-se-quitur style of cutting.

While they were at it, he and his editor could have done a lot more especially the epilogue in gay Pa-ree. The director also still indulges his penchant for a revolving camera. "From rip to strip" may be as simple a phrase as any to explain how the whole affair gets started. Both gals are named Maria. Maria I (Moreau) loses her partner in a sister act, finds a substitute in Maria II (Bardot).

An involuntarily ripped skirt leads to a voluntary strip-tease and the pair are on their way. Laura Devon a Handsome Blonde During -her recent filming of a four-part Dr. Kildare, in which she played a nun," Laura, Devon wandered habit and all onto the adjoining stage where "The Singing Xun" was being filmed. "Get a picture," cried an alert publicist; "she's for real." She was, at that not, but otherwise she Is. She is a handsome blonde actress, lately seen in Howard Hawks' "Red Line 7000," which whatever else it did showcased several of the town's sightlier new faces. Laura is also 50 of one of Hollywood's most improbable songwriting teams.

Her partner in melody is Pearl Kauffman. better known as Igor Stravinsky's favorite pianist. What they have collaborated on is some big beat notably "Hey, Little Face" and "I'd Like Some of That." Their modus operandi there for a while was that they had some demonstration tapes made and Laura would wheel up to a radio station or club in her recorder-equipped XKE and persuade a deejay or a combo to step outside for a listen. Her manager finally persuaded her it was a dubious proceeding, imagewise, but meantime it was the most refreshing advance in song promotion since singles went 4V And it looks as if one or more of the top pop groups will be recording some of the songs. Laura other interesting ambitions.

"I always wanted to be a stand-up comic," she says. "I dream of going out there to wipe out the people with my off-beat So far this hasn't worked out and it's probably just as well; she is too pretty to laugh at.
