J. Andre, a fine actor and one of the Hollywood club's regulars. Andre is the chief strength of this production, though director Alan Jay Factor has surrounded him with good support.

In its unexpurgated version, "Tobacco Road" is one of the dirtiest plays ever written. Producer Allan Hersholt has laun-d this melodrama from the Depression 30s and given it an excellent staging against Marshall Reed's seedy cabin on Jeeter Lester's farm. Andre gives the shiftless Jeeter human dimensions and dominates the drama. He is a very good reason for seeing "Tobacco Road" again after all these years. Good Support But to praise Andre is not to slight the others, all of whom contribute their share to the over-all excellence of this production.

Marjorie Davenport as the long-suffering Ada, her soul suffocated by poverty, must be allotted special mention. She brings dignity and quiet humor to the role. Her death scene Ada is accidentally run over by her son Dude in his wife's new car is still a poignant moment. Martin Lair plays Dude, the lazy son, with convic- ACADEMY AWARD NOMINE! Gene Tyburn, new to the Masquers troupe, cuts a strong figure playing Lov Bensey, the husband of the beautiful Pearl, love-child of Ada and a passing stranger.

Stacey Maxwell plays the child-bride, a role that hardly demands more than a pretty face. Miss Maxwell fills this bill perfectly. Harry Antrim, Charles Cabaness and E. W. By-Ington come up with effective smaller bits in this play taken from Erskine Caldwell's novel.
