July 27, 195 City Muou CIt, Kiwanis Hears Reasons tor Price Controls If communism or socialism ever saddled on the American peo pie, it won't come from Russia, A K. Maulsby, lecturer for the Kan' sas City, office of price stabilization and former Mason City- an, told the Mason City Kiwanis club Thursday noon at Hotel Han- lord. "We will put it on ourselves as we go blithely down the primrose road to national bankruptcy with our pockets full of 10-cent dollars," he explained. Inflationary factors working together have resulted in a mad race between supply and demand with demand far in the lead and prices on the wing, he said. Uncontrolled, this means disastrous inflation, he added.

Cites Inflationary Causes Maulsby cited the following rea- jons for this demand: 1. The government, for defense purposes, has entered the market as the nation's greatest consumer. The government is placing orders at the rate of $1,000,000,000 a week, or 25 per cent of the nation's total income last year. 2. The government, in a time of has continued its pra tice of buying agricultural products to keep the supply down.

3. The United States continues to loan money to foreign countries so they can purchase from the U. S. raw materials and other supplies in terms of billions. The imports from these countries is decidedly lesslhan their purchases.

Commenting on the government's: purchase of agricultural commodities, Maulsby said it is time for new appraisal with a trend downward. "As calloused as we are to crises and emergencies, we must admit the purchasing power of the dollar is on the shreds and something i must be done about it," he declared. 1 Says Controls Are Stopgap Controls are the temporary stop! gap which is needed to preserve the economy in face of this tremendous inflationary pressure, he said, and added that when ceiling prices went on, inflation stopped because people halted their abnormal buying. Whether Orientals look to the West instead of Russia, will depend on how well the Americans carry the torch of democracy, he said in commenting upon world affairs. The torch must be clean of political, military and economic aggression, free from racial prejudice and free from religious intolerance, he said.

"If we were to get peace tomorrow, we would be scared to death economically," he pointed out, "because the businessmen along the main street of America have been so engrossed in grabbing the dollars. It is going to be'property in the amount of $1,500. critical for us unless we take time to be informed on world affairs." Maulsby was a member of the Kiwanis club in Mason City when ae was employed from 1922 to 1924 by the Standard Oil company. When he left here he became associated with Socony Vacuum Oil company. Maulsby was introduced by H.
