An intense but weakening low pressure center was in the northern Gulf of Alaska. Strong high pressure centered about 1,400 miles north of Hawaii.

There were showers along the coast of Washington and Oregon and variable cloudiness along the coast of California. For the Newport Ensenada race: Mostly clear today. Winds west to northwest less than 10 knots from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. and 10 to 20 knots from 10 a.m.

to 10 p.m. NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY Warm weather prevailed over much of the southeastern half of the nation. In the north central United States definitely cooler weather was the predominate feature. Chicago's lake front experienced temperature drop of 23 degrees in less than 5 minutes. At Chicago's O'Hare Airport the temperature fell from 78 degrees to 53 degrees.

Precipitation was negligible in the south central United States, but locally heavy amounts fell in northern Michigan and in the Pacific Northwest. Of the heavier amounts, Totoosh Island in extreme northwest Washington reported nearly two-thirds of an inch The national weather outlook for Tuesday: Clear to partly cloudy across most of the nation.
