(Parts 1, 2, and 3, now published.) NEW DICTIONARY or TUB ENGLISH LANGUAGE, BY CIURLES RICHARDSON. With the view of placing this Work confessedly of an important character within the reach of every class of tho community, it will be published at the lowest possible rale; the Pusushci having made arrangements in London for a set of Stihottpb Platis, enabled to offer it at a much lower price than it could otherwise be issued. It will form Two large Quarto Volumes each page will contain three closely printed columns and the whole will consist of Thirty Parts. Each part will contain Eighty Pages, price 50 cents, and will appear semi monthly, until the whole is completed. Suhtcriiert' Samel received by retry Bookielltr in the United WILLIAM jJACKS0Nt pMi, 53 Cedar Street, New York.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. From th Evening Pott. Ilia plan of the compiler has been to supply the omission of pre vious lexicographers, not only in retrard to the words admitted, but in regard also to uieir definitions and the examples of their use uisun unlnng the original and simple from the modified and metaphorical ine.iiiing, and ascending to the earlier writers of KngUsh with a view of presenting, in a scries of illustrations, a sort of history of each term contained in the work. This plan he appears to have faithfully and industriously followed and we believo it is no undue praise to say, that he has given us altogether the best dictionary of our language yet compiled. The enterprise of republishing the work in this country deserves, and, we are sure, will meet with success April 143d.

1 lie second number of Richardson's new Dictionary of the English Language has been issued by William Jackson of this city. On referring to the advertisement of the publisher, it will be seen that th? nee of a single Part is reduced to fifty cents. The Parts, ei consisting of eighty quarto pages, are issued semi monthly. Tim arrangement for obtaining the stereotype plates from England, an I striking off the impressions, has enabled the publisher to afford it at a moderate price. April 26, ls30.

From the Xtw York Commercial Advertiser. A New Dictionary, in quarto, which, in our opinion, is to supersede Johnson. Walker. Sheridan, and all others, as the standard in the English language. The Dictionary of Mr.

Richardson is, in fact, a hisi.iry of the language and this character it receives still more largely from the copious quotations, exhibiting each word in its origin and progress care being taken to place the quotations always in their true order of time, as regards the era oi the writers trom whom they aru taken. 1 lie plan, as we have said, is strictly that proposed by Dr. Johnson but either from disinclination to devote the tune, and undergo the im i inmo labor of research that would be necessary, or, more probably, because the science of philology was not at that time sufficiently ad vam od to admit ol its posswiiiiy, the intention was not fulfilled. Mr. Richardson has undertaken it, and, so far as we can judge from the apociiuen number, with great diligence, ability, and euccett.

We have no doubt his dictionary will take the lead of all others. April 21. From the Xew York America. Il. or us only to add that the typographical execution of this numlier is beautiful, and that tho whole will he completed in thirty monthly numbers, at the price of fifty cents each.

Apnl 4, 1H36. Wo noticed, soma time ago, the first Part of this new Dictionary. 811 then the price has been reduced from 69 1 3 to SO cents per Pail, which will henceforth be issued seini nionthly, and the whole completed in thirty parti. The type, paper, and general execution of the work are excellent. Jl ay ItvJo.

From the New York Time: William Jackson, 53 Cedar street, is joint publisher, and receives subscriptions for this important work. The advertisements in our col. nuns state the plan and tho terms, and those who desire such a boo hive now an opportunity of obtaining, at an extremoly cheap rato, what the London Quarterly Review calls a dictionary such as, iwrliaps, no other language could ever boast April SO, 1836. From (Ac New York Trantcnyt. 1 he first number of one of the most elaborate and magnificent works on Hie English languare has just been issued from the press of Mr.

William Jackson, of ii Ccdar streot. It is a new Dictionary by Mr. C'harks Richardson, one of the most distinguished of the literati of England. It will be completed in thirty parts, each Part being a handsome quarto of from eighty to one hundred pages, at the astoiusturut low price of fifty cents per Part. Simultaneously with the publication heii it is published in London, by Mr.

Pickering of Chancery Lane. Tbp British Magazines and Reviews are, without exception, enthusiastic in praise of the work, and pronounce it, as we do, to be one of the most important and valuable that lias ever been published. Apiiti, IBM. Our readers will recollect that the original prospectus fixed the price of each Part at seventy five cents, but so unexpectedly great, we are glad to leam, has been the patronago extended to the publication, that it is now afforded at the extraordinary low charge of fifli cents! Under such circumstances, it cannot fail to be eminently successful. April 31t, 1836.

ichardson's Dictionary, a new work, is one of the best ever published. April 6, lsJ6. One of the greatest and most valuable literary enterprises of the pre ent day is the publication of a new Dictionary of the English lan ige, compiled by Charles Richardson, which, for research, accu Vacy. great labor, and completeness of execution, surpasses any airoHx work of the kind in any language extant. if ay 8, 1836 The iYie York Evening Star.

Hie new Dictionary of the English Language, by Charles Richardson, now re pubhshing in Now York, in Parts, seems to take wonderfully with the public, both in England and America. Besides a considerable increase to the stock of words, the etymologies and deonrtions are given in their fullest extent. But the most important improvement, and which renders it superior to all other dictionaries, re the varied and numerous examples given of the application of each word, so that its adaptation or fitness to the idea meant to be com eyed cannot be mistaken The quotations are in prose, poetry, and blank verse, and thus, whilst studying the language, you are also denting instruction and amusement. Tlus work, when completed, will certainly be the most valuable and cheapest of the kind ever yet published. 6, 1836.

Fross the Xew York Courier and Enquirer. The republication of this work, in Parts, is undertaken by Mr. 'William Jackson, of this city, and we venture to say, that a more alntble publication has never issued from the American press. Oi the high value of this Dictionary there cannot be a doubt. We have looked into it with some attention, and have no hesitation in pronouncing it, in every essential particular, the very best work of the kind in our language.

The labor of such a work must have been immense and the research necessary to its completion seems almost loo much to have been accomplished by one man during the ordinary term of life. Mr. Richardson, however, hat accomplished the tank. Hen ulean as it may seem and the Dictionary, completed through the alphabet, will be before the public as soon as it can be carried through the press. In tlus Dictionary every word is placed before the reader, from the root to its derivatives, and its etymology carefully noted and determined.

The substantive, adjective, verbal and adverbial significations explained, not merely by definition ex cathedra, but by examples of the sense in which it is used by all the writers of any authority in the language, beginning with the earliest, and followed up in chronological ordor to the latest only excepting living authors. We repeat our belief, that no book written heretofore, on the subject of lexi cogi.iphy, can give the English student so thorough a knowledge of his own language as the present and we hope the enterprising publisher may meet the reward which his praiseworthy undertaking so justly deserves. From the Xew York Sun. The announcement of a new English Dictionary naturally elicits inquiry as to its claims to a preference above those other dictionaries of the language which are already established in the use and favor of the public. We will answer it briefly, by saying, that the pretension of Richardson's Dictionary are, to a more accurate etymology, or i.idical and distinctive meaiung of words, and, to a more systematic and chronological illustration of the use of them.

The original decgn of Dr. Johnson was to give, first, the meaning of words trom the etymological elements of which they are composed then their adopted or consequential meaning, and then their metaphorical and othe (srurative meanings. Secondly, to arrange the quotations by whw'ii 'heso meanings were to be illustrated and authorized, in systeiuatic reference to this analysis, and in the chronological order of tint works from which the quotations were made. This stupendous lesign, however. Dr.

Johnson did not execute he found it too and abandoned it lor tne easier task ol promiscuous illustration. The labors of the subsequent editors of the work have Socied little more than a technical coagmentation of the materials as thny lie upon the ground but Richardson, availing himself of these materials, and accumulating many more appropriate ones, lias ar ranged litem undor tne successive periods to which they belong, and lias thus reared a magnificent fabnc of the language, terrace above terraco, and column above column, more nearly in the order ol its history than any preceding lexicographer. A dictionary which should contain the etymology and definitions of Johnson, or rattier Klchardson the orthography of Webster, (with mam, very many exceptions,) and the pronunciation of Walker, would be of inestimable value, and would soon supersede every othei. In the first of these essentials wo consider Webster's Diction ary as extremely defective. Comparatively unread himself in the old English literature, he disdained the aid or Its elder lexicographer and etiooung rather to fish in the turbid waters of oriental dialects, than in the cloarer streams of the more immediate sources of the language, he has given us doubtful exotics where we had a right to xpe plain and unsuspicious food Even in that branch of his work wlurli we most coinmond, for its greater accommodation to the orthographical tendency of the ago, he has either gone too far or not far nouxli.

lie would have innovated less in writing tic for kick, or itte lor stick, than in a multitude of examples less justified by analogy or de manded by consistency. He might have written deth for death, with as much propriety as he has written 'ether for feather, and have carried on his bold reforms in directions where he would have mot with more popular concurrence than in those which he has erratically sursued. But. notwithstanding these eccentricities, we are fully con vinced that his general svstom of orthography might be adopted in a new dictionary with great advantage. Yet who is to be found who would undertake such a work, with the little encouragement to literal labor which is presented in this country 1 And what publisher would recompense the labor required for such a work, when the best dictionary extant (Richardson can be procured Irom bngland, and republished hero at the price of fifty cents, for eighty closely pruned quarto pagos May 1830 Frost the Penntyhanian.

A work deservedly celebrated, and highly commended by the most aioloiina piuioiogists oi tne aay. Apru it, isao. Received the second number of Richardson's Dictionary of the English Language, a work of which wv some time since spoke in terms of merited praise. To the student, and to the man of letters, it is invaluable, and the London Quarterly Review terms it, with truth, a dictionary such as, perhaps, no other language could ever boast 1836. From the Philadelphia Vailed Stotet Gatette.

A work now being published in New York, which ought to, and will, we doubt not, excite public attention. It is A Dictionary of the English Language," upon the plan proposed by Dr. Johnson, but not earned out by that distinguished lexicographer. It is known that Dr. Johnson was unfortunately ignorant of the ear language of the English, and of the languages of the north of Europe hence he not unfrequenlly failed in his etymology.

A work of this curious and useful character, will scarcely fail of ample success. jtpni 13, 1836. From the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily Courier A work of more than ordinary importance. We warmly and confidently commend this new undertaking, as well because of the value of the work, as that the plan of the enterprise affords an admirable opporl unity to such persons as cannot supply themselves at once with a valuable dictionary, to do so gradually, and in a manner in which the expense will soem comparatively light. We may add, that the London critics speak of the work, as published in that country, in the strongest terms of praise.

Apnl 16, 1836. Frost the Quarterly Review. Wo are inclined to consider the English language as having attained that fullness of maturity which leaves no wish for increase, but only mo anxiety for preservation. As helps to tlus, we have the various acceptations in which every word has beenused bv approved writers, collected by Mr. Richardson, in a Dictionary, such as, perhaps, no other language could ever boast and we have a new guide for the theory and use of languages, exemplifying his (Uorne Tooke's) principles, by applying them to our own tongue.

Frew the Literary Gatette. The compiler, who has already approved his ability for the work, by what he has contributed of It to the Encyclopedia Justly observes, that Dr Johnson did not execute his own project, and that the desideratum of a dictionary to exhibit, first, the natural and piimitive signification of words, then give the consequential, and then i metaphorical meaning, and the quotations to be arranged accor If to the aget of the authors," is, at the distance of nearly ninet) years, still mors to be desiderated now than in 1747, when the learned lexicographer made his proposition to Lord Chesterfied. Mr, Klchardson derives considerable aid from Home Tooke's philological labor and, from the Part before us, ws would anticipate a useful and interesting work. In offering to the pubiick a portion of the town lots at Grafton the proprietors have no inclination to enlaige upon the supenour iiiai location, it has beeu a principle irom wrucu they have in no instance swerved, to avoid inflated descriptions, and all other arts by which towns are sometimes forced into an ephemeral notoriety. Present and iemrmi.iv brntfit to them selves, has formed no part of their object. On the contrary, they mvariauiy aougm io lay broad and deep the foundation oi future prosperity, confident "that time would unfold lis advantages; that Grafton, sooner or later, would excite the attention, "and ob tain tne connaence ol tnecamta 1st. Thev believe that nenod nas now arrived. Men of business from everv section of our counli express their unwavering conviction that Grafton must unavoidably become, at no distant day, a gieat commercial and manufacturing town.

Located at the mouth of the Illinois, the termina tion on tne south, the great chain of communication with L.ake Michigan, this point is the natural depot of a wide region of country. The Illinois andiMichigan Canal, alreadv commenced, will open the markets of Albanv and New York to the farmers of Il linois. That each of these towns, with such a location, will become the emporium of an immense commerce, hardly admits of a rational doubt. Such points are the natural depots of a country, and in vain are wealth and influence and enterprise employed to diver. the current of trade to other places. Obstacles may indeed be in out mey are temporary. 1 he tide of commerce soon sweeps away every opposing barrier, and flows on, with acceleia ted force, to the point which nature lm marked nut.

That such locations are the great central points of business need no proof out tne nare inspection or the map of any commercial country on the lobe. It is not to the exports and imports of our own state only, vast as they will inevitably become, that the trade of Grafton "will be limited. A rich and extensive portion of Missouri will find in this town a fat more accessible market than any within their own state. The west bank of the river opposite Gralton, is distant only ten miles from St. Charles, over a smooth and level prairie of the richest soil while from St.

Charles lo the mouth of the Missouri only, is a distance of more than went 7 miles, alone river whose channel is constantly changing, and' whose current is almost irresisuuie. Among these is a railroad charteied at the last session of our legislature, to connect this town with Car rollton and Springfield. Its route will intrisect one of the most valuable and hig'ily cultivated districts of Illinois. This railroad of 88 miles in extent, is but a link in the great chain of inland communication which lias been matured in this state, to connect by railroads, our rich interiour counties with the Illinois and Michigan canal.

Bold and stupendous as the undertaking is, its success is almost certain. A spirit of enterprise is awakened in Illinois that will not pause till this magnificent plan is effected.
