Burns is much better. For sure, an old man's part is easier when you're 79. And, true, Burns' low-key humor style perfectly fits the victim role. Nevertheless, his presence is a welcome treasure of silence in a too-loud film. INASMUCH AS "The Sunshine Boys" is a comedy about old comedy stars, you might reasonably expect to see a bunch of old comedy routines.

Sorry, but we only get one long one the one the boys prepare for that television special and it's not that funny. Certainly not funny enough to give credence to their billing as "two of the biggest stars of vaudeville." I expected a black-and-white film-within-a-film of Burns and Mat-' thau doing old bits. Instead, we get Matthau delivering oversize helpings of tired Yiddish humor. The opportunity far a darker, more meaningful story also is kissed off in favor of a mealymouthed conclusion. "The Sunshine Boys" simply provides more of the insult comedy sweeping television.

It's a prune-faced "Odd Couple" without that play's affection for its characters and its characters' affection for each other. It's a spinoff, too, of Simon's penchant for taking apart New York City. When Matthau is cursing Burns, we're treated to' the routine comedy of an older man moaning about a changed world. Gene Siskel reviews the movie scene Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the Channel 2 News at and 10 p. m.

117 Chicai Ave Lafltiy 7 i0 Tanaa 1:00 only OUSTIN HOf-FMAN 'LlNNy' i 'Lo Toaq In forli' Adultt Only ered look is missing. It's strictly a gag show. In fact, we're not really sure why Matthau hates Burns. He says it's because Burns during their act used to poke his finger in Matthau's chest and spit when pronouncing words beginning with the letter But that can't be the real reason. Those actions must have stood for something else.

Maybe it was Burns domineering attitude? But the character Barns plays in the film is rather sweet. Maybe it was based on Matthau's failed offstage life envying Burns' more successful offstage life. Maybe, but we're not given any evidence to support that. THE ULTIMATE explanation for Matthau's anger is, of course, that it is the premise of the show; the premise that makes the gags work. We're supposed to accept it on faith.

We're supposed to be so inundated with wisecraekery and laughs that we never ask the question, "Why?" But I got tired of all the yelling and screaming in gag form, especially because Matthau never convinced me his character was 73 years old. He doesn't look that old and he doesn't act that old. His obviously manufactured creaking walk only makes vs more aware of the 20-year gap between him and his character. His overacting also extends to dialog. Matthau barks anger like a wounded seal.
