Friday Evening, December 10, 1954. Navy to Launch Largest Vessel Built By U.5. Controversial Aircraft Carrier Forrestal Scheduled to Slide Down Ways on Saturday WASHINGTON triumphant U.S. Navy Saturday launch the largest American ship; ever built, the 5197,859,000 super- aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrsstal.

The mighty man of war. 1,0361 feet long and displacing 59,650 tons will be eased gently into Hampton Roads, with pomp befitting a new capital ship specially designed for the jet-atomic age. Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson and others will wish the ship well in speeches to an audience of congressmen, government officials, military leaders, shipyard executives and workers. The gigantic flattop will be sponsored by Mrs.

James V. Forrestai, widow of the first defense secretary whose name it bears. Controversial Ship One of the most controversial ships in naval history, the Forrestal is being built for 520.141,000 less than the $218,000,000 forecast when the kee! was laid on July 14, 1952, the Navy said today. It is scheduled to be completed in, the fall of 1955 and commissioned in the fleet with a complement of 3.826 and about 90 planes- jet atomic bombers and interceptors. Afloat, wilh its modern, high- speed planes able to reach targets 1.000 miles from its deck, the vessel will represent an investment of I about 5372,000,000.

As the ship moves out of the i graving dock, aided by 12 tugs, ati the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock it will be sailing straight into a new argument over the future need and role of aircraft carriers. May Be "End Of Line" Some experts suspect the Forrestal class is the end of the line in ship size. Two sister ships, Saratoga and Ranger, are building, a fourth is authorized, and a fifth is to be sought next year. Otheir experts except first atomic powered carrier to be larger, maybe by 15,000 tons. The Forrestal is the longest and broadest sbip ever built but its displacement tonnage is less than that of the British Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.

The nearest approach to the Forrestal revealed by a check of Navy records wast he Japanese carrier Shinano, which displaced 59,000 On its maiden voyage in November, 1944, it was sunk by the S. submarine Archerfish, com-i manded by Capt. The supercarrier concept as adopted only after tier controversy which saw a Navy secretary resign, a chief of naval operations fired, a prolonged Air Force-Navy wrangle over bombers vs. carriers, and an "admiral's revolt" against unification policies.

Officials said the question of allowing the Chinese to leave this country is under "continuous study" by the State, Defense and Justice departments. They reported that the 35 are the remainder of some 67 Chinese students who had expressed a desire to return to their homeland. Eighteen have arrived i. Red China. Nine more are expected to arrive in Hong Kong within the next few days.

There was some doubt that the list 35 would shrink much more in the near future because of Red China's high-handed action in sentencing 11 American fliers to long prison terms, and holding other Americans against their will. The 35 Chinese, who are free to travel throughout this country, approximate the total of 28 American civilians in jail ia Red China and three priests who are under house arrest. Eleven other American civilians have been unable to get permission to leave the China mainland although they are not technically under arrest.
