High pressure covered most the Eastern Pacific with the center of highest pressure located about 1,100 miles west of Eureka. There was considerable low cloudiness and fog along the California Coast and fair weather along the coast of Washington and Oregon. NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY Smoldering heat continued to cover the California interior regions. As heat waves shimmered over the desert sands, in the Death Valley region of California, Furnace Creek recorded a high temperature of 120 deg. The record high ever recorded in the United States also came from Death Valley.

That was 134 deg. at Greenland on July 10, 1913. The temperature contrasted sharply from the interior of California to the coastal regions. Palmdale, just over the San Gabriel Mountains from Los Angeles, reached 108 deg. While in Los Angeles the city temperature rose to 82 and at the airport the mercury only climbed to 67 deg.

Skies were mostly clear from coast to coast last night. A few isolated thundershowers that cropped up over the Rockies slowly vanIshed in the cool of the evening. The thunderstorms that rumbled over the Southeast did not give up quite so fast. Scattered thunderstorms covered most of the Gulf Coast region from South Texas to Florida and up the Atlantic to the Carolinas. A couple short lines of thunderstorms were over Western Florida.

Blinding rain hit the Tampa area. And several funnel clouds and waterspouts were spotted in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. LOCAL TEMPERATURES--Thursday's maximum and minimum temperatures at Southern California points, as reported to -the Los Angeles office of the U.S. Weather Bureau, were as follows: Station- Max.
