The only everyday clothing advance in "Sleeper" exists in the way citizens are fitted for new wardrobes. They step behind i screen which 1 ctronically measures them and feeds out a new garment as if It were a package of cigarets. Of course, in Allen's case the jacket doesn't fit and that sets off a short robot with a large nose and spool of thread torso screaming Jn Brooklynese, "OK; OK, we'll take it in." The scene is so-comic you don't seem to mind that all Allen receives to go over his bellbottoms is a karate-type wrap jacket. But elsewhere in the film, French twist hairdos, button earrings, id e-burns, silver-strapped platforms, wide- lapeled suits, matte jersey shirt-dresses, miniskirts, T-shirts and cutoffs, safari jackets and all those tur-tlenecks contribute little humor and only the unfunny prospect that 2173 may be immersed in the nostalgia of 1973.

tan-clad society is appropriately overstated at a 2173 cocktail party at which guests get high by passing and fondling a silver sphere about the size of a cantaloupe. The current state of the cocktail party is neatly satirized by attendees in sweatshirts bearing the likeness of "our leader" (a vaguely Agnewesque man), spangled garter belts, caftans emblazoned with swastikas and gargantuan jewelry. Today's costumes tomorrow are similarly useful when Allen, as Miss Montana, somehow finds himself among the at beauty pageant. The buxom contestants still wear matching one-piece swimsuits with the traditional modesty panels atop the thighs and Allen wins the lengendary scepter, roses and fur-trimmed cape. The appearance of a bowler hat early in one of the opening scenes is also an excusable piece of 1973 in a film about the future it works as a quick wink to the tomorrowland of Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." But unlike "A Clockwork Orange" which gave Wednesday, Jan.

By 2173, a talking computer will advise a doctor if he's about to make a surgical mistake but the doctor's gown still has to be fastened with those awkward strings in back.

Future sex is "performed" in a cylinder known as an orgasmatron (since everyone is either frigid or impotent except men of Italian ancestry), yet women still appear in nonelectric curlers and men still shave, with straight razors. People are the masters of gravity (provided their personal flying machines are adjusted correctly), but they have yet to conquer flyaway hair and wrinkles. Now what kind of a future is that? In "Sleeper," which amounts to Woody Allen's film version of "Future Shock," it is quite a serviceable and hilarious one. But it is a future in which there are stunning technological advances in nearly every field except everyday attire. Fashion whims today may change faster than the seasons but apparently 200 years from now Allen and costume designer Joel Schumacher see the world schlepping around in the same old stuff.

thoroughly mid-20th-cen-tury looking that they could have worn half their "Sleeper" wardrobes in "Flay It Again, Sam." The best of the exceptional outfits is Allen's uncontrollable inflatable suit which resembles a cross between a watermelon and 1 a graduation gown and helps render him one of the all-time buffoons. The other futuristic getup is that shared by the black tied, silver domed robots who act as cooks, butlers, maids, gardeners and chauffeurs. In a put-down of homosexuality, the robot working for two effeminate men comes with limp wrists and a white apron. The robots' stark white and chrome faces become the subject of one of the funniest silent gags in the film when Allen hides from security police in the back of a robot pickup truck and attempts to blend in with the white-faced, black-suited creatures. The camera pans the inside of the truck, focusing on each of the identical white, silver and black beings and then discovers one with timid red eyebrows and black glasses.

The police of the future stumble about in either red zipfront jackets with black-striped red motorcycle helmets or in stream-lined black costumes which fall somewhere between a Gernreichian interpretation of a Hell's Angels' uniform and a paratrooper's suit. While "Sleeper" is certainly not meant to be taken literally or halfway seriously, it has virtually ignored the opportunity to indulge in a futuristic costume fantasy. Thus with a couple of brilliant exceptions, we're left with a lot of turtleneck sweaters and the suspicion that Schumacher stopped by Bazaar CM and Mr. Guy on his way to work.
