Barry, who succeeded Elgin Baylor as CBS. analyst, teams up with Pat Summerall for a few sets be-, fore the telecasts.

"We made arrangements at a couple of indoor places in Milwaukee and just outside of Boston to work out," said the NBA superstar on the phone from his Alamo home' hvthe Berkeley Hills. "It's really fun and I feel better when I'm active. It gets me up for the telecast; your body is going, whereas if you sit around all day waiting for gametime you tend to get lax." Barry and Summerall seemed to hit it off when they first met Pat is low-key and Rick is excitable and out-spokea They compliment each other on TV. felt very "badly about being the one to replace. Baylor.

He asked Rod Hundley to express to Baylor in no way did he want the great ex-Laker to feel Barry was trying to "undermine him" and that he'd feel terri-Jble if Baylor felt any animosity toward him. 'Barry got the word CBS was interested in him through -Warrior owner Franklin Mieuli. The network also was -interested in Jerry West It depended on whether the 'i Warriors or Lakers made the play-offs. When the Lak-eYs made it, CBS sought out Mieuli for an OK to approach Barry. first thing I did was discuss it with my said Barry, a father of four boys, "because she's the one r-who had to make up her mind if she wanted to have me away from home again for several weeks." Barry came into his analyst role with good credentials.

I He's: had an interest in broadcasting since his days at ''Miami University. As he says, to some athletes. coming into TV it might be a spur-of-the-moment opportunity i they take advantage of, but not him. He's since done sports reporting on NBC radio in San Francisco and' Oakland. He also worked college basketball on TV in the Bay Area the year he sat out the game when he jumped leagues.

'When Barry played in New York two years with the. ABA he did weekend sports commentary for ABC and also filled in for Frank Gifford. Barry admits in his new TV posture he gets a fresh perspective on the plight of NBA referees, those fellows in striped shirts with whom he's had a few minor alter--, cations. "I sympathize with the officials they may not believe "'it-J-but I do because I think they have one of the two most 'difficult jobs in professional sports (the other is being a coach)," comments Barry. "Every time they blow a whistle somebody is mad at them." During the current series, Barry has spoken, to a ref: call, I've said during a time-out when they walk by.

I haven't told them yet that they blew one, because I figure if you're going to say anything it might as well be 3 St compliment They'll remember any derogatory re-3 marks you make." Barry and Hundley get along great, too. "Even though he at first gave me a couple of full Curt Gowdys," laughed Barry. "That's the Hot Rod's explanation for doing a lot of talking and upstaging on camera while I just stand there."
