Mr. Dumbrille's commanding presence and resonant voice made him a natural for roles as captains of industry and successful politicians as-well as smooth villains. He was born in Hamilton, and had wide stage experience before making his film debut in "Elmer the Great" with Joe E. Brown in 1933.

His film credits included "Lives of a Bengal Lancer," "Naughty Marietta," "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," "The Firefly," "Charlie Chan at Treasure Island," "Christmas Eve," "Son of the Paleface, "Jupiter's Darling" and "Julius Caesar." Perhaps his most memorable roles as a heavy were in comedies, however. He appeared with the Marx Brothers in, "A Day at the Races" and "The Big Store," and tried to foil Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in "The Road to Utopia." His later career extended into television.
