Larry IIIIII NORTH HOLLYWOOD 26 yrs. of the Week Award to: the Globe Tire Customer Two drivers involved in the crash that sent Salt' Walther to the hospital called "ridiculous" editorials suggesting the Indianapolis 500 race be discontinued. "These people who talk about one or two incidents are seeking notoriety and not doing justice to the sport," said Dick. Simon, 39, of Salt Lake City. "A lot of people like to talk about something they know nothing about," said John Martin, 34, of Long Beach.

"I'm sure if they were on the other side of the fence they would see how ridiculous such comment is." What is needed, say the drivers, is more self discipline by the men who drive the cars. "We need to school ourselves better," said Simon. "We've got 10 times more safety factors in these cars now. It used to be if you crashed like Swede Savage did you knew damn well you didn't have, a chance. Perhaps some drivers are neglecting the fact they can get it.

"Some drivers need to start using their brain using more mental disci-' pline." Rico Carty has been having his troubles at the plate. The onetime National League batting champion was called out on strikes twice Friday night against Baltimore, and after the second one he stormed back to the Texas dugout and began cursing loudly. Manager Whitey Herzog told him to calm down, but Carty turned on the manager and the two had to be separated by teammates. Herzog left him in the lineup, however, and Carty singled the next time up to boost his average over .200 for the first time this year.
