Cop Off the Take Continued from Page 49 all, and no one for a moment, can deny the frightening authenticity of the corruption in depth which Serpico found and disclosed in New York. It is just that the taking villains are given largely as greedy villains, quite prepared to threaten the life of a fellow officer who has threatened to blow the whistle. You have to suspect that the rationalizations are as ugly and revealing as the deeds themselves. At that, "Serpico" is demonstrably anti-bad cop, not anti-cop. And if the movie raises a few more questions than it answers, it raises them surpassingly well. It projects a frightening picture of timidity and in-action at the top which trickles down to the most penitential beat in the surly ghetto streets. Dede Allen was the editor, and her name is high on the list with Pacino's, of course of those who should have Academy nominations for their work on "Serpico." Bob James arranged and conducted the music by Mikis Theodorakis, which is effective without being over-insistent. The singularly telling art direction and production design were by Douglas Iliggins and Charles Bailey. Martin Bregman was the producer for Dino de Laurentiis and Paramount, and the team assembled under him has. come up with an important and spell-binding motion picture. It opens Tuesday at the Village in Westwood, the Pantages in Hollywood and the Van Nuys Drive-in. WOODCMr'F IS WFT.
