it seriouslT to be wared, will not lone al low room to any thing, that i not loathsome or nocking. A newspaper is pronounced to be very lean and destitute of matter, if it contains no ac count of murders, su'teiUos, prodigies or monstrous tiirtna. Some of these tale exeite horror others disrupt yet the fashion reigns tike a tyrant, to relish wonders, nd almost to relish nothing else. Is this a reasonable taste or tt It naonslroii aud wormy 01 rniicuw i lha h.atnrv nf Nam ait the malar tMie worth rending Are oddities only to be bunted Pray tell men of Ink, if our free presses are to diffuse information, ana we, the poor ignorant people, can get it no other way than by newspapers, what knowledge we aro to glean from the blundering lies, or the tiresome trains about thunder storms, that, strange to tell 1 kill oxen or burn barns and cats, that bring; two headed kittens and eowt that eat their own pigsf The crowing of a hen is somauted to forebode euckoldom and the licking little buz in the wall threatens yellow fever. It real; as if our newnaper were buy to spread superstition.

Omens, and dream, and prodigies, are recorded, as if they were worth minding. One would think our gazettes were intended for Unman renders, who were silly enough to make account nf such things. We ridicule the papists for their credulity yet, if all the trumpery fcf our papers is believed, we have little right to laugh at any set people on earth and if it is not believed, why is it printed Surely, extraordinary events hare not the best title to our studious attention. To study nature or man, we ought to know things that are in the ordinary coarse, not the unaccountable things that bnpjie i out of It. This country I said lo measure seven hundred I million of acre, and is inhabited by almost six million of people.

Who can doubt, then, that a great many crimes will be committed, and a great many strange things will happen every wren years. There will be tb under showers, that will split tough white oak tree and hail storms, that will cost ome farmers the full amount of (irmly MUmgt to mrnd their glass window; there will be tavern, and boxing matches, and elections, and gouging, and drinking, and love. and murder, and running in debt, and running away, and suicide. Now, if a man lupposrs eight, or ten, or twenty dozen of these amusing events will happen in single year, is he not iut as wise si another man. Some of the sharking articles in the papers raise imule. and very simple wondrr; some terror; ami aonse horror aod diguat Now what instruction is there in these endless wonders? Who isthewiwror happier for reading the aerounts of them On the contrary, do they not shuck tender mind, and addle hallos? brains They make a thousand old maids.

Worse than this happens for some eccentric minds are turned to mischief by snrh accounts, as they receivy of troops of incendiaries burning our ri tiea: the spirit of imitation is contagious and hoytare mnd nnarouotaht bent to do as mm do. hen the man flew from the steeple of the North church fifty Tear ago, every unlucky boy thought of unfiling but flying from a signpost It waaonre a fashion to stab heretics and Itavail lac, who stahbed Henry the fourth nf 1'ranre, he a aassin of the dukeof liuise, and of the duke nf Bucking ham. with n.ny other, only followed tlie's lum. This taste will multiply prodigies. The superstitious Romans used to forbid reports of new prodigies while they were performing aaenfiers oa such ejeenont. Every horrid story io a newspaper prodacrt a shock I but. after some time, Ibis shock lessens. Atlrugih, such stories are so far from giving pain, that Ihey rather raiae eurtatity.

The wonder is a easy as to stare i and the atsatt vacant mind the must in need of suck resources as cut no trouble of arrut or reArrtinn it ia a sort of laud fur idle cu riosity, that is ready chewed and digested. On ths whole, we may inust, that the increasing fashion of printing wonderful talc of crimes and ecri dents, is worse thaa ridiculoas, as it corrupts both the public taste and morals. It multiplies fables, prudigi us momters and rrirors, and tlius makes hocking things familiar while it withdraws all popular attro uowirota ismuiar iruint, oecause ra not marking. Now, Messrs.

ftrling al PUaianl FUcy. We have read with great pleasure the account of the proceeding the eting of the eitizens of Dutchess county in Pleasant Valley on the 18th inst The meeting was composed of all classes of citizens opposed to the prohibitory sys tem. William Bard, Lsq. or Hyde Park, was called to the chair, and Joaiah Williams, Esq. of Poughkeep sie, and Joseph C.

Hoffman, F.q. of Freedom, were appointed secretaries. Before any business was transacted resolution, expressing the sorrow of the meet ing for the loss which Ibe state has sustained in the late dentil of Gov, Clinton, was proposed and adopted. The meeting was then addressed by the chairman and several other gentlemen; after which, a series of resolutions, and a memorial, drafted by a committee appointed for the purpose, Were laid before them, and unanimously adopted. The memorial is well drawn up, in a manly, tempe rate, and firm tone.

sets out with observing, that memorials had been circulated among the citizens of Dutchess amnly, representing the agricultural, media uic, manufacturing, and laboring population of that county to be in a state of extreme depression, and pray ing for the adoption of the prohibitory system as a metly. This representation is affirmed to be mistaken and incorrect. The agriculturists of that region are substantially prosperous and flourishing; the wages of the laboring clashes have never been so high, in pro portion to the expenses of subsistence; the mechanic are in a condition of comfort, independence, and suc cess: the wool growers and wonllru mnuufactur era, whatever may be their own declaration on the subject, aie surrounded by all the apparent eircumitan ees of prouerity and iu short, there is no clats of the community who do not receive a competent recompense fur their capital, skill, and industry, em' ployed in the various occupations of the country. The memorialists disapprove the premature and artificial cultivation of pursuits and employments not natural to the present period of our national eiistence, and "de precate the introduction of noy systrm which may change the present lmppy state of their affairs, and, by attempting to improve what is now reasonably good, lrad to evils and injuries beyond the power of correc tion. The following is the conclusion of Ihe memorial Unable to comprehend how the necessity of higher price for woollen manufactures, so loudly asserted by the high tariff aririatra, can milily be reconciled with tiiat reduction Inch these same men promise from domestic comoetilion.

The tariff bill recently reported by tlie Committee on Manufactures, bat created a pro digious excitement in various parts of the country. 7 he 3d sect cipal objection to tbe bill is the duty on coarse wcol. These sticklers for manufacturing independence, ere it semis ilttennined to be dependent on foreign countries for the wool of which their fabrics ure made. On Monday last, a manufacturers meeting was held in Philadelphia, in which the duly proposed in the bill for the benefit of their friends the wool growers wa condemned in the st rongrst te. ms. A strenuous effort will be made to modify the bill ia such a manner as to suit their intents.

If the monstrous amendment of Mr. Mollary should not be adopted, an attempt will be made to strike out the duty on coarse wool, aud leave the wool grower to take care of themselves. If tbi can be dune there will be no difficulty about the other provinions. We are confidently assured by those who profess to understand the state i opinions at Waili ington, that tbe whole array uf manufacturer, agents for manufacturer, and admini'tration member of Congress who profess to be the only aud genuine friends of Ihe American System" arc prepared to take the hill with this single alteration. There will be no wincing at the odious impost oo molasses, no be sitatinn at the eiorbitaat dulir on hemp and iron.

We advise those on wiiom Ihrse imports may full heavily, to look lo their own intrrests. They need expect neither ympalby nor assistance from tbe friends of the woollen manufacture who nr solr'y occupied in the project of procuring a bill to increase the prices of their own fabrics. ion al passed the committee rose and the house adjourned.
