T. Branagan, Emmetsburg editor, causing damages estimated at $3,500. The cause of (he blaze is unknown, and the loss is covered by insurance.

The early files of the Emmetsburg: Democrat, weekly newspaper which Branagan edits, were destroyed. The papers were valued because of, the early Palo Alto county history they contained. The fire was discovered by neighbors, who saw flames shooting out the root and third-story windows. The fire department was summoned, but by the time the trucks arrived the entire 'roof of the house was ablaze, with the flames, fanned: by a shooting several hundred feet in the air. Three lines of water hose and a chemical hose were played on the flames, and firemen battled for an hour and a half before the blaze was extinguished.

The entire third story of the house was destroyed, and the flames did some damage on the second floor. The ground floor of the home was damaged by water from the hose. Much of the furniture was removed to the yard during the fire by volunteer workmen.
