"I've been wined and dined," gushes Mai Shanley, the 22-year-old half-Irish, half-Thai beauty who holds the 1984 beauty title. "I've met celebrities like Joan Collins and Tom Selleck, and I had a reception with President Reagan. I've signed autographs, kissed babies and posed for photographs. I even toured canning factories.

Reichardt Judith McConnell has. portrayed some of soapdom's more memorable villainesses Augusla McCloud on "General Hospital," Valerie Conway on "As the World Turns," Miranda Bishop on "Another World" and Eva Vasquez on "One Life to Live" but her most challenging role to date has been as Sophia Capwell on "Santa Barbara." That's because the role required Miss McConnell to make her first appearances as Sophia's alter ego Dominic. "It wasn't easy to convince the audience that I was a man." says Miss McConnell, who wore a wig, body suit and beard to help her carry off the part. "I had to learn to walk differently and to speak in a lower voice," remembers Miss McConnell.

She has since shed her disguise and taken to wearing silks and sequined finery as the wealthy Sophia. After playing a man, Miss McConnell insists that she wouldn't trade her femininity for anything in the world. "I enjoy being a woman and, if I want to, being overemotional," she says. Miss McConnell also jokes that she wasn't able to flirt with the good-looking men on the "Santa Barbara" set when she was decked Victoria Principal Miss Light came to primetime via the soaps.
