(U.R)--The "battle ot the rubbish heap.' is going on below me with a rerocily only partly concealed by d r i f t i n g clouds of smoke. Right now we're sending a column of tanks down highway 6 into the ruined city. Even up here in the hills I hear the vicious rattle of machine guns from the mass of smashed masonry that used to be Cassino. The Germans are making a fight now for every ruin just as they fought for every house before the air force smashed the town into rubbish Wednesday. The Germans know that once we blow the stopper out of their line at Cassino, our forces will flow nor(hward* toward Rome and a junction with (he Anzio beachhead. They're making it tough. The tanks are catching it from German artillery as they waddle toward the town. I follow them as they pierce a smoke screen and emerge on the other side. A shift in the wind has shifted the smoke screen and exposed the highway. The Germans lose no time in pumping in artillery shells but the first bursts kick up great mounds of black earth fringed by blue-grey powder smoke well off the targets. The jeep which had been leading the tank processions comes racing back from Cassino like a scared rabbit as the German shells burst closer. It weaves in and out among the oncoming tanks. The tanks roll imperlurbnbly on toward Cassino and seem to blend into the landscape. The whole scene is marked by battle. Above Ihe (own on Monte Cassino, infantry creeps up toward the ruined monastery we smashed when (he Germans fortified it. There, (oo, (he Germans have imbedded themselves in the masonry and progress is slow. Thursday morning our mortar barrage was falling halfway up the m o u n t a i n but now in early afternoon bursts are falling all around the base of the monastery, almost blotting it from view. Our medium bombers arc dishing it out to the Germans over beyond the mountain. I've counted 200 crossing to dump their explosives on enemy concentrations supporting the last-ditch defenders of Cassino. Suddenly flak spurts up from German guns al the base of the mountain and one black burst seems to engulf a marauder. The plane breaks away from the smoke and we see that one vying is gone. It spirals down like a maple seed, emitting two black specks which unfold into men and parachutes, and crashes with a great burst of red flame and black smoke. The bulk of our smoke shells arc being dumped in(o souUi Cassino. which by 1 p. m. is almost completely obscured. The shelfs contain phosphorus, which emits a brilliant red flame and then sends up dense clouds of milk- colored .smoke. Between clouds.I can make out the old Roman coliseum in south Cassino. with a gaping hole in one wall where it was hit by dive bombers which attacked that are;i Wednesday evening. The four-story hotel in t h a t section, which was one o[ the strongest buildings in town and which presumably, is a German strong point now. has been melted down to two, and gaping holes have been torn in the lower walls. As for the rest of the town, there is hardly a second story left on a building. It's a mess, but we have to have it it we're to gel north.
