OUTDOOR TYPES 1 If Winter Comes, Can Coats Be Far Behind? BY JULIE BYRNE, Times Fashion Staff When the man with the barometer and temperature gauges makes a prediction of button-up-your-overcoat weather, there, are many ways to keep warm. You can don a pair of long woolies, huddle by the fire and sip a hot drink. But if the falling autumn leaves and a touch of chill in the air make you turn to the great outdoors it is easy to be comfortable, chic and still heed the call of the wild. Fuzzy-wuzzy pile coats, hooded parkas and pullovers will keep you comfy as a bear in hibernation. And you'll look a lot prettier in these warm and cuddly covers than old brother bear in his hollow tree.

Teamed with tartan capris or pleated skirts you are ready for a stroll in the woods or travel by car. Soft and supple wools go to greater lengths to add a bit of cold-weather comfort. A pullover smock in brilliant plaid is lovely as an autumn landscape and will keep you snug as a bug in rug. AUTUMN orange yellow-and white plaid wool smock by Casual Time, upper right, is worn with blending jersey capris. Scarlet pullover and forest-green hooded parka in deep pile fabric by White Stag, right, are contrasted with the wool tartan of a pleated skirt and slim pants for a stroll in the woods.
