StStt. "WCHLD PEJik SELLERS WITHOUT Also "WALTZ OP THS StlAWS" TOREADORS" Birthday, of Roy Harris The latest institution of higher learning to join the Los Angeles area's cultural boom officially is Loyola University whose spring music series contributed a concert in honor of Roy Har ris' 63th birthday la St Robert's Auditorium Saturday night. It was a gala event and no effort was spared to under- score the observance. The composer, practically a native Califomian (he arrived by covered wagon in San Gab riel Valley at the age of 5) was on hand to give a brief autobiographical sketch and to listen to three of his most important chamber music creations which also happen to be among the most Im portant produced in the United States. No less impressive was the roster of participants brought together for the oc casion: Johana Harris, pianist; Eudice Shapiro, violinist; Sanford Schonbach, violist; Edgar Lustgarten, cellist, Nathan Ross, violinist Wife Plays Piano With Mrs.

Harris, the com poser's wife, playing the pi ano, the authenticity of the performances was assured. The music of the "Soliloquy and Dance" (1939), the Violin Sonata (1942), and the Piano Quintet (1936) is second nature to her, and her way with the rugged demands of the rhythmic shifts, the split- second timing and the fili gree passage work was pia-nistic perfection. Her support of Mr. Schon bach in the meditative "Solil oquy" and the exuberant Dance contributed not a little to the high level of the violist's interpretation, and was mirror and foil to Miss Shapiro's dazzling artistic spectrum. Quintet a Monument If the program's duos were splendid milestones on Har ris' creative trail the Piano Quintet is a monolithic monument Sharing the timeless-ness of all great works, it has lost no vigor or immediacy.
