MASON CITY GLOBE-GAZETTE, APRIL 23 1936 NINETEEN NEW ROADS WILL PROVIDE ACCESS TO INDIAN RELICS Corner of Northeastern Iowa Is Site of Ancient Mounds. AMES--The eternal sleep of the Nori'i. American mound builders who centuries ago inhabited the northeast hill country of Iowa, is about to be rudely disturbed by the progress of modern civilization. For years an unimproved country road provided the chief access to the Indian mound region in the extreme northeastern corner of Iowa. About three years ago, the road was added to Iowa's primary road system by the Iowa highway commission, and designated as No. 182. This week, Dr. Charles R. Keyes, state archaeologist and professor of Mount Vernon, urgently requested the Iowa state planning board to mate possible an immediate entrance by archaeologists into the Allamakee county Indian mounds before road builders reach certain mounds over which extends primary road No. 182. Joins Minnesota, Koad. The highway commission last month awarded a contract to Nolan Bros., Inc., of Minneapolis, for grading No. 182 from Lansing northwest to New Albin, on the Minnesota state line, where the road will join with Minnesota road No. 26 extending northward along the Mississippi river. Work of clearing the 8% mile highway and grubbing out old brush and tree stumps began April 1. The grading project is to be completed by Nov. 1, and is scheduled to be followed by gravel surfacing. Some six mounds are known to be in the path of the new road, Dr. Keyes said. Knows of Other Mounds. He also asks help in entering other Allamakee county mounds on a road from Waukon Junction to Harper's Ferry, scheduled by the highway commission for grading. No contract for this work has as yet been let, according to the highway commission. Director Ross H. Matson of the Iowa state planning board stated he would do everything possible to hasten a project now under way under planning board supervision, known as the "Recreational and Historical Project." In addition to considerable recreational area work made possible by federal works progress administration funds through the planning board, a part of the general project was to make possible further archaeological research in Iowa, to be directed by Dr. Keyes. A few WPA relief workers may be used.
