These days there is every kind of week that the ingenuity of man can conceive of, being promoted to the public. They range from the ridiculous to the sublime. From "Fly- Your-Kite" Week to Community Chest Week. Many of these so-called Weeks which have for their purpose the exploitation of some selfish motive should be held up to ridicule. They serve no purpose except to their fond sponsors who hope to derive personal gain from the promotion. Now comes Notional Want Ad Week to take its deserved place somewhere in the long list. Examination of its qualifications for consideration will indicate whether or not it deserves the attention of the general public from one end of this broad land to the other. Want Ads offer a peculiar and distinct service to the average American family. They touch the everyday activities of .most of us in so many places that to enumerate them all would be impossible. From the day we outgrow the crib which sheltered us (and which was then passed on through a Want Ad to some other youngster) until the time when the notice of our demise appears, Want Ads serve us regularly. The securing of a position--the locating of more commodious living quarters---the disposal of unneeded household items and wearing apparel --the acquisition of such possessions as a car, a radio, a home,-or a dog, are all parts of the regular daily service these little inconspicuous messages render. The trend of general business conditions in any community are often gauged by experts through careful analysis of Want Ads. Increases in the number of positions offered indicate that more people will be employed. Decreases in the number of rental notices indicate a housing shortage that will in turn create more employment in the building trades. In fact, some experts maintain that the last depression period was definitely forecast months before 1929 by the trends in Want Ads. But these things are secondary. The close association of Want Ads with Mr. Average Citizen is the proof on which the jury must decide. And the very fact that Mrs. Jones can rent the spare room in her little suburban home through the same medium and at the same cost as that which enables Mrs. Manymillions to obtain a maid, proves their universal appeal. As a means of acquainting more people with the service available to them through "the little business messages in the back of the paper," we commend National Want Ad Week. May its effect extend until in every home, living is more comfortable. This is the natural result. Acreages A48 FOR SALE -- Improved 5 acres, close in. H-20, Globe-Gazette.
