MASON CITY GLOBE-GAZETTE, APRIL 16 193G THREE RAIL HEADS RAP WHEELER BILL Measure Would Protect Men Losing Jobs Because of Consolidations. WASHINGTON, (/P)--Two railroad presidents attacked the Wheeler bill to protect employes dislodged by railroad consolidations Thursday as setting up such a "rigid" system as to make any economical consolidations unlikely. Carl R. Gray of Omaha, president of the Union Pacific system, and L. J. Lancaster of Dallas, president of the Texas and Pacific system, told the senate interstate commerce committee the. bill would not only delay consolidations but would discourage railroads expanding to reach temporary trade by raising fears that when' they chose to withdraw from such traffic they would be unable to do so without great expense. Trailing them before the committee, R. V. Fletcher, general counsel of the Association of American Railroads, asserted the measure was "probably unconstitutional." , Prevailing Rate of Wage Claimed Plan for WPA Next Year WASHINGTON, UP)--Representative Connery (D-Mass) told newsmen Thursday he was informed two months ago by Harry L. Hopkins, works progress administrator, that it was planned to pay the prevailing rate of wage uniformly over the country on WPA projects financed by next year's appripria- tions. Chairman Buchanan (D-Tex.) of the appropriations committee now considering the 51,500,000,000 relief fund lor 1937, would give no indication whether there was to be such a requirement in the new bill. Connery said he had understood from Hopkins that such a provision was contemplated. Keosauqua Woman, 82, Burned to Death When Blaze Destroys House KEOSAUQUA, UP) -- Mrs. Florence Donaho, 80, was burned to death about 8 p. m. Wednesday at her home southwest of Mount Sterling, near here, when fire destroyed the house in which she lived alone. The cause of. the blaze was unknown, but the fire may have started when Mrs. Donaho was fixing her heating stove fire, ···Her'body, wrapped in a comforter, was found in the ruined kitchen. -Real Estate Transfers.
