Nancy Boutilier usually succeeds at whatever she tries, so there's no reason why she can't become a trailblazing referee of men's college basketball.

The 18-year-old incoming Harvard University freshman has her sights set on eventual certifica tion for officiating major games in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. If Nancy makes it, she'll be the first woman to do so. "I grew up competing in sports against boys and I don't want to stop," she said from her home near Worcester. "I practice in front of a mirror, making calls," she says. "It's one thing to know the rules, but you have to be able to 'sell' your decisions to the coaches, players and fans. "I just love sports," Boutilier adds. "Officiating isn't great money and if that's what you're interested in, see you later.

There's a lot of traveling and you take a lot of guff. But I'm looking forward to it." Meantime, Nancy has made the best possible start. She's invested in her very own chrome whistle. quality of a basketball referee. You just can't teach it." Russ Beisswanger, executive secretary of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association in Tenafly, N.J., says his organization which supplies refs for colleges games throughout the East never has certified women to officiate men's games.

But it's actively looking for candidates. "We had a woman apply a few years ago but we turned her down," Beisswanger said, citing the applicant's lack of qualifications. "But we want to respond to the general pressure for equal opportunities." Boutilier, who will play on the Harvard women's basketball team as a 5-foot-6, 125-pound guard, says she's taking her am games are so much faster, so much more exciting." A straight-A student at Algonquin Regional High School, Nancy was accepted at Yale, Princeton and West Point, but she chose Harvard. And last month, she was the only woman to enroll in a basketball officiating clinic on the Cambridge, Mass. campus.

This summer, she has sought to polish her skills at a basketball camp in Weston, run by Boston Celtics center Dave Cowens. "She's got a way to go, but she really shows a lot of promise," said Charlie Diehl, an ECAC basketball officiating supervisor who lectured at the Harvard clinic.
