In addition. 48 Iowa counties have a f u l l - t i m e public health n u r s i n g service connected willi Die state department through the distrcil offices, and two oilier counties have independent nursing services. The district doctor fjives most of his attention to raising the general health level of the district, rather t h a n m a k i n g specific family contacts. Similarly, the public health engineer spends most of his time on broad health matters such as advising on proper methods of sewage disposal, and on ways and means of m a i n t a i n i n g .sanitary community water and milk .supplies. Time pel-milling, he also works with individuals and families. He will help with problems of sewage disposal and farm milk sanitation, and is ready lo answer questions about well construction, location and contamination. * ··{· if. The county public health nurse offers advice on health problems ranging from meal planning lo caring for the sick. Besides carrying on individual i n s t r u c l i o n work, she conducts community health education programs. She may also include home nursing classes and instruction in nutrition, how to keep health and how to check the spread of communicable diseases.
