10 M a s o n C i t y G l o b e - G a z e t t e . Rural Schools. And BurchinaTs Proud Answer i* This No. 1 Showpiece of Mount Vernon Township TVQRCHINAL'S answer to -D to a demand for better schools in Iowa is this modern building throughout. It is Mount Vernon No. 1, a long step from the era of gray paint. It is the type of building that school superintendents like to build, with multiple windows, low blackboards, built in bulletin boards, and of course the latest in heating and plumbing. Such small items as bulletin boards might not seem as essential to outsiders as some other things, but to the child attending school, the bulletin board is his guide post. On the bulletin board are the, names of the books he has read, the graph of his arithmetic grades, school news, and many other items of intense interest to him. The rural school child takes pride in his schopl's bulletin board. Mrs. Phyllis Wood, teacher,- has the pupils out for recess, playing "Chase the Fox" or some such name.' Games are very popular with this school and Mrs. Wood has her pupils play many interesting' ones in line with educational pursuits. Now'sTime to Rid House of Roaches -Now's the time to declare war on the household pests, says Miss Lucile Buchanan, county exten- SWEETHEART is GOOD BREAD ion home economist. The food obbing cockroach may-be lurk- ng in damp basements, pantries nd cupboards--ready to make n's rounds at night. Sprinkle so- lium fluoride around his nightly oafing places and the roach will ake his own poison. Bat b« persistent about it, seests Miss Buchanan. One day's powdering will not kill aU he roaches. Blow tbe sodium luroide into cracks and crevices every 10 to 14 days. As another method, place a piece of chocolate cake on a newspaper and dust the fluoride around it. The cake will draw :he roaches, and poison, bait and all may be cleaned up easily. But remember, fluoride is poisonous to all animals and humans. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Household fly.spray also will rid a house of cockroaches. Spray thoroughly once a day for 2 weeks. For the next 4 weeks spray twice a week; finally, spray once a week for the last 2 weeks. Keep food in tightly covered containers or in the refrigerator. Use roach traps. Homemade ones are easy -- smear a thin film of vaseline about an inch around the inside of a quart fruit Jar mouth. Use a small piece of food in the jar bottom for bait, and set the trap upright in a corner. If all home tried methods seem to fail, a profession exterminator may be employed to fumigate the house with tear gas or hydrocyanic acid gas. This will necessitate vacating the house for 24 to 48 hours, but all life stages of the cockroach wilt be killed. Irregular time of feeding high producing dairy cows will do more to- decrease production than irregularity in time of milking.
