F A R M , J A N U A R Y Grub Control Will Produce Better Beef Cattle grub control this winter is a "must" for the farmer who wants to produce meat and milk most efficiently. Emphasizing that statement, Marion E. Olson, county extension director, points to the high demand for milk and other dairy products and the continued shortage of meat in spite of the large livestock population -on Iowa farms. Mr. Olson says few farmers realize the serious effect that S t ^S 5 and their Parent-me heel fly--have on gains of beef cattle and production of dairy cattle. When heel flies cause cattle to stampede in April to July the animals lose flesh and milk production goes down sharply. From May to March, the larvae of heel flies are migrating through the muscles and forming warbles or bumps in the backs of cattle The presence of grubs irritates the animals and keeps them from doing their best This means wasted feed and lowered profits. The only practical time to control cattle grubs Is from' December to March--after the erub has cut a hole in the hide of the bach and a definite swelling or hump can be felt, states Harold Gunderson, extension entomologist at Iowa State college. During this period, treatment with rotenone dust, purchased ready mixed from druggists, feed dealers or farm service companies, will show amazing results. Watch cattle closely after Dec 1, and apply the first treatment 30 days after the first small bumps appear, Gunderson advises. Run the cattle through a long narrow chute and rub the 1.66 per cent rotenone dust thoroughly into the backs of the grubby animals. A pound of dust will treat about 10 head once Repeat every 30 days. Treated cattle look better at once, are quieter and eat better. Tests have shown that they gam an average of 7 pounds per month more on the same feed. No accurate figures are available on dairy cattle, but it is known that milk production increases sharply following grub control. With the feed situation easier than it has been for the past 2 years, feed grain prices are expected to remain below ceiline levels and probably at or near present levels for the next 3 or 4 months.
