Cerro Gordo Has Its Old Time Schoolhouse M o s o . n C i t y G l o b e - G a z e t t e CERRO GORDO county has its old time schoolhouse still, but the children who attend are very modern in spirit! Miss Margaret Quinn, teacher of Portland No. 2, is shown here with her pupils, out for flag raising, one of the important events of their school day. Wesley Pippert is raising the.flag. The entire school Venrollment is in the picture, with the exception of Harold Pippert, brother of Wes'ey, who was absent that day. Portland No. 2 is one of the old timer class, built without basement, w i t h dark heavy pine floors, hijrh blackboards, few windows, practically no ventilating system and none of the conveniences of modern schools. ,, In Portland No. 2,._how r ever, is as fine a group of progressive youngsters as one. will find anywhere. Some of them do outstanding work. Portland No. 2 is one of the schools slated for a better building- as far as its physical appearance is concerned as soon as cpndi-" tions permit. Com is not expected to take its usual upswing in 1945, economists at Iowa State college say. Prices of most feed grains have declined since the small grain harvest got Under way. To produce good timber, woodlots should not be grazed by livestock. For each gallon of milk a cow produces, she needs to drink 3 to 5 gallons of v/ater. Start Grub Treatment Immediately When grubs start to show up in backs of native cattle which are being fed out, apply rotenone to control the pests even if the cattle are to be marketed in the next GO days. It pays, according to Marion E. Olson, Cerro Gordo county extension director. He points out that treated cattle, on the average, will gain about 7 pounds a month more than untreated cattle.
